There are 30 of these so called shell programs and if you multiply Pokki 3mil downloads (which is a low number) times 30 you end up with close to the number of Windows 8 that M$ says they sold.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
In that case you are using it on 3 w8 licenses - that equates to 3 different users.

I have 8 licensed on 3 puters without downloading any shell helpers so it balances - out 3 users downloaded 3 users did not

Who are the individuals that are saying that all eight-million downloads are actually being used? How many people on the different Win 8 forums are stating that they actually use these third party Start Menus?

Let look at Stardock and Start8. When they first came out with Start8 they were giving it away free for life, what, yeah "FREE FOR LIFE." Guess what, they must have forgotten what they said, because Free for Life became $5.00 (sorry forgot about the 30 day demo you could download from CNET), CNET shows about 450,000 downloads. Now who is to say of the other 2.5 million that downloaded it from Stardock are actually using the program/application.

Now my point is not to argue that eight-million people did not download one of the dozen different Start Menu applications, but how many of that eight-million downloaded all of the dozen Start Menu Applications in order to determined which of those they would like best.

I can say up front that I have downloaded at least six of them, and even though at present I am not using any of them still I have Classic Shell (Free) loaded onto my win 8 computer just in case there may be a need for it. . .never know.

Also, a good deal of the computer manufacture include something they have come up with just in case their users require or want a start menu over the start screen. My new HP has a built in start menu all that needs to be done is turn it on (did, and it wasn't all that great).

A good deal of the GUI changing applications available for win 8 comes preloaded with Classic Shell Free. The people at Classic Shell Free have given these third party developers permission to use their product (think that is just great).

Every time I open Windows 8, it opens in desktop mode with Classic Shell. When I want to use a Mobile Phone Interface, I pick up my mobile phone.

I tried ModernMix, but because the apps are pretty much useless and not even written to support 'windowing', it serves no purpose whatsoever.

And this is different from how MS says they have sold 100 million copies of w8?

I wonder how many of them are sitting on a shelf somewhere, most I suspect.

I would say that a good number is not even installed on a box either.

Don't forget the more than 10 million downloads of "Classic Shell".
I downloaded a copy, and have installed now on several computers.

I kinda like this one, Start Menu X I got the Pro version on a good discount, sometimes you can find it free.

tried the others too, IObits Start Menu 8 is also OK for free

Not sure how this WBlue will effect these people that develop these, but if the start menu isn't as good on it I assume I'll just stick with what I'm using.

Tihiy says he has had over 1m downloads of startisback. That is the paid version. He has a free version as well. He didn't say how many of the free version. He probably doesn't care about the free one now.

At $3.99 a pop - that is amazing. Sounds like he has made more money in the last few months than he ever dreamed of.

Way to go MS.

I don't have any figures for the other 30 or so start menus.

You might conclude there is teeny bit of demand for these things

The figures being thrown around just are not realistic. The reason being if a person buys a Start Menu application then that person could possibly be installing it on more than one computer. If this is happening then there is a possibility that the eight million number could be even twice that maybe more.

There is no way to really know how many computers are running on Windows 8 with a third party Start Menu.

In all reality no knows how many people are using a third party Start Menu. All is known is around eight million downloads have taken place.

Of those two ( there are about 30 others as well ).

Yes that is correct.

We don't know how many are in daily use.

MS have probably got a pretty good idea how many.

They are not likely to tell us, for obvious reasons.

It doesn't matter how you twist it, 8 million or so is still nearly 10% of total sales (even if it were actual sales to consumers), that's a statistically significant figure.

No matter how you twist it you still cannot prove that nearly 10% of total sales of Windows 8 have third party Start Menus installed.

No I can't prove it.

I can't prove the earth is not flat either.

I will give you a hint.

I know only 3 people who have had win 8 machines. They all loathed it.

Two of them were completely unaware that there is such a thing as a start menu replacement.

10%...??? Closer to 25% minimum I would say. The 8 million only counts start8 and pokki. Add in classic shell's 10 million downloads, then factor in all the others, and there's dozens, and you get a much more realistic number.....

I downloaded Bluestacks 4 times.

Twice for my desktop. Twice for my Surface. Both machines got deleted after finding how crappy it worked the first time. I re-downloaded it on the desktop after it came out of beta. On Surface, I also re-downloaded after they released the Surface optimized version. Doesn't mean it's being used on 4 machines. I downloaded it only for Instagram and that's it.

So, 10 million downloads for a buggy working program like Bluestacks to use something I hardly want or need to use, in relation to about 10 million for a silly start button, doesn't really mean much either. People don't really need or want something after a download. I could do without Bluestacks. I absolutely do not need or want the start button back. Especially on my Surface.:thumb:
