Solved Update Android 2.3.6 to 4.2.2

Hello World!

I hope there are some Android geeks here.

I have Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360.
GSM, Factory Unlocked, Not Rooted.
I can root my phone if absolutely must needed in order to update.

Currently by default it came with Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.
My question is how do I update it to the latest Android OS Jelly Bean 4.2.2?

Download OS files from somewhere and install them...Please describe the process below and provide download links or files.

Android is an open source OS, so I am assuming that this entire update process shouldn't cost me a penny. Again my phone is not obligated to any career.

And also please mention if doing so would harm my phone in any manner.

Thank You.

Sadly, I do not know, McNeil.

In fact I'm in a similar position, wanting to investigate the possibility of upgrading my ICS (Version 4.0.3) tablet to Jelly Bean.

Hopefully, someone may be able to help us both.

Wenda.

There are actually lots of videos on YouTube and instructions on random websites I found through Google.
Problem is all of them gives you customized Jelly Bean ROM which would upgrade your OS from any previous OS to the Jelly Bean but all of this is done by their custom ROM, not by generic ROM of Google or generic ROM from provider of your device's manufacture.
I don't want to risk upgrade with any random ROM that would give me fake/cracked OS since if its custom ROM it could be stealing your data or so on because its customized ROM not generic one.

Well I am keep looking and hoping to upgrade my phone before May, if you find something then please post here.
Thank You Wenda.

I can't help with your specific device as I don't own one myself but I am a big fan of Android.

I recommend you head over to the XDA forums, they are a dedicated website full of talented developers with teams and individuals who do this stuff everyday.

I've had numerous android devices over the years and I always find what I need over there.

I also run custom ROMS from there on my devices. You should not worry about them being cracked or containing malicious code. Android is open source and google release the code to the public, which means that the developers there can get the latest android running on existing devices way before the actual manufacturers push them out, and that's even if the manufacturer still supports it, as many of them never do.

There is always a chance that someone might booby trap a ROM but the all the people over on XDA would notice straight away as they all tend to check out each others work so they know if something is amis. My advice is to stick to the big and well known developers, at least your safer with them.

The beauty of this ecosystem is that many developers actually get the ROM's running better than the manufacturers, as they spend more time optimising them, and they also add many useful features that otherwise would not be there.

Depending on your device you may also have the option of installing a clean android ROM, which is a pure android experience without any customisation or UI overlay on top which the manufacturer may put on.

Many ROM's are built from the pure android experience and also some are built from the device specific manufacturers which they say "built from stock ROM's".
If your still uncomfortable running a custom ROM you can also find many "stock" ROMS there, which means they have been untouched are are usually direct from the manufacturer.

I always unlock, root and install custom Rom's on my devices as the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Sometimes it takes a bit of figuring out as it can get quite confusing over there, but if you do decide to go down that avenue I would recommend study and read all instructions. I have been confused in the past and it can sometimes take some trail and error, but don't be put off, I've spent days flashing diffrent ROM's until I've found one I am happy with. Eventually you will even get to the point where you might enjoy experimenting with new ROMS.

I also found XDA Forums for Android while I was searching for some assistance in order to upgrade.
I wasn't sure if they were credible source but I take your suggestion and will try them out.
I am not really picky about getting exact 4.2.2 version of Jelly Bean, I just want to get Jelly Bean due to being latest OS and supporting Flash. Android 2.xx Gingerbread doesn't support Flash or Adobe Air so web browsing experience is poor and doesn't support many apps.
Thanks Burtie.

No problem at all.

I'd say XDA are very credible, they are very well known and a huge resource.

I am not sure if your exact device could support the latest android if it is only a gingerbread device. Best to have a look at the XDA forums, if you go to their main page there is a box in the top right where you can put in your device name and it will take you to the right section.

I know your pain with gingerbread. Hopefully you can upgrade :)

So I did used XDA Forums and AndroidForums but both of them have tons of custom ROM for different OS versions.
As I said I am looking for Generic Jelly Bean ROM, not customized by someone.
I was expecting to download generic version (Stock ROM) from Google or my phone's manufacture's (Samsung) website, not from some random person's MediaFire account.

Untouched/Stock ROM from Google are available here. But they haven't published one for my device, all those are for expensive Nexus and Galaxy S. So I am not sure if I should risk upgrading it with incompatible ROM.

Couple other websites that have custom ROM for my device (Galaxy Y) in particular are here. Link 1, Link 2.
Like I said both of them are custom from random people, I am not comfortable installing them.

If you guys find any link where Google or Samsung has officially published Jelly Bean ROM for my device Galaxy Y GT-5360 (Img above) then please post it here.

Thanks for you all's reply :)

This is kind of why I don't like android, it's turned into something it shouldn't be. A smartphone shouldn't be dual booting OS's, a smartphone shouldn't be acting like a PC in general. It's a communication and information device, not a productively and management device.

Having said that, I'd jailbreak my Lumia 900 and install a custom ROM of Windows Phone 7.8 purely for the UI tweaks such as further color customizations.

Why would one want to install this heavy weight, overbearing useless Windows ROM on an Android phone. There are plenty of svelte Android ROMs that can do the job a lot better.

Why would one want to install this heavy weight, overbearing useless Windows ROM on an Android phone. There are plenty of svelte Android ROMs that can do the job a lot better.

You do realize that Windows Phone 7 (Tango update installed) runs SSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO much more better and efficient on a handset that android 2 was built for? 256 MB of RAM, 800MHz single core processor, and 4 gigs of storage operates in a similar fashion to a Windows Phone handset with a 1.5 GHz single core processor, 512 MB RAM, and 16 gigs of storage, even if it's a Windows Phone 8 handset. There little difference in the user experience on a very low end Windows Phone handset and a top tier one other than boot time and app load time. The UI and interaction is similar.

Now do this with android, you have a bloated open sourced platform with several different versions out there, most of which can never be updated to the latest version of android (usually a crapshoot as even some people I know with a GSIII always talk about if they updated to jelly bean yet) or even a version higher without an unlocked bootloader and a custom ROM and skill. All versions of android are different, all are bloated, all are fragmented, all have security issues that took Windows 15 years to accomplish; took android just a few. I have NO reason whatsoever to install android filth on a Windows Phone handset, that would be an abomination.

The major thing with a custom Windows Phone 7 ROM is having home brew apps to provide UI tweaks and some other things like that. Maybe one day soon Windows Phone 8 itself could be on a Lumia 900, but that seems unlikely. By the way, a Nokia Lumia 900 is a Windows Phone 7 handset, android would look ABSOLUTELY HIDIOUS on one of those.

I have no problems with Android, to be honest I think it's great! I love discovering new Roms and flashing them...it's half the fun. As soon as I find a decent ROM I like I keep it. The latest versions of Android are nice and sleek, and no problems with bloat at all. But I can fully understand not everybody likes to be doing things like this to their phones or tablets.

All OS have minimum system requirements. OEM have released statements that they will not write Jelly Bean updates on devices with only 512mb of RAM or less. This tells you that JB requires a lot of data space on your device to be able to function fluidly. But you may still be able to do it by rooting your device and making your expansion slot as the main memory storage. It is a lot of work which may not be worth all the trouble at all.

Fourthofjuly, I have seen lot of Galaxy Y (my phone, has lower RAM than 512 MB) running Jelly Bean smoothly.
You can checkout some on YouTube.
They even suggest you the download link to the custom ROM that they used to upgrade to the Jelly Bean but like I mentioned in beginning of the thread I am just not comfortable using random ROM that I do not trust.
Anyway although being able to use Adobe Flash and other apps and Jelly Bean are very appealing but after a long search I can't find any appropriate ROM for my phone so I've give up finding one now.
Can you please link the article where Google discloses that they would not write Jelly Bean ROM for devices below 512 MB of RAM, I would be interested in reading it.

what you want to find at XDA is the forum specific to your device. There are roms that are based on just the source from google and are not bloated at all. I had a Samsung Captivate, it had 512 MB and it ran JB like a dream! From what I have seen just browsing over there, ICS seems to be what most roms are based on. Try to find one that is ASOP based and it will be open source based, instead of using Touchwiz or some other propriatary Launcher. That saves alot of RAM right there....

McNeil, I can't find the site I've seen before about the 512mb RAM. I stumbled upon it while I was waiting for the OTA JB update for my HTC One X. It may be specific only for a brand. Some people may run the JB smoothly on 512 ram (rooted or unrooted) but they may find the hiccups when they start opening and running apps at the same time. And it may not be as easy as downloading an over-the-air update like I had for my One X. It may be quite a work making JB work on devices with 512mb or less RAM like downloading a custom ROM that you mentioned about.

Hi McNeil.
Why would you upgrade you Galaxy Y to Jelly Bean 4.2.2. I'm afraid it won't give you much benefit.
Galaxy Y have very limited hardware spec to support JB 4.2.2. We usually start toying with JB 4.1 or the latest starting with Android that have any procerssor that 1,2 GHz or higher, run better and smother with any type of dual or quadcore processor which supported by at least 512mb RAM (1GB is better).
Friendly advice, keep your Galaxy Y with Gingerbread 2.3.6. If you have other samsung android devices with higher spec then you can learn how to use Odin to flash the latest Clockworkmod (CWM Recovery) that you can use it for flashing cutomized ROM.
There are many android forums that provide detailed support in doing so. (XDA-Developer, Androidforums, or even kaskus, etc)

For some other types sometimes we need to use interctive ADB command prompt to root, backup, and restore.

Hope that helps a little.

Kevin.

Hi.
I've been working with android rooting, flashing, or even bricking it. :p

What makes me interested in it isn't what ROM is the best, but how to find so many things works after doing some messy click and push. But, generally Customized Jelly Bean ROM are best in running apps. The most thing I like from XDA cook is the combination of apollo app and DSP manager which throw the best music ever with very low freq bass filter that best to listen through my Rappo H6060 bluetooth headphone that I use to plug it for biking throughout the city every morning.

I do have all my four smartphones and tablets are rooted and flashed with various customized ROM. :dinesh:
