Cloud users -- is your data really secure !!

I only use the "cloud" as a transport layer between my machines. (I.E. DropBox). I don't store anything there as primary storage and don't plan to.

The story isn't necessarily about security, but whether or not your data is private. I'd suggest to those who like to store child porn that they don't do so in the cloud.

I use cloud storage, but not for anything tremendously important. And my private info in the cloud is encrypted with box cryptor.

I believe cloud data is pretty secure.

:ditto:
That's a good question. Personally I don't think it's private in a sense you have on your encrypted offline data disk but rather call it "cloud private" and you might think of something here... since those disks are not really yours in the end.

There is no way I would store anything of mine on some disk drive out there in the ether available for taking by any hacker in China or Finland or even the douchbag sys admin that monitors the system. Every time I read "cloud" I cringe and shake my head. This is coming from a corporate IT guy.

But we make posts on forums, and many use email systems where stuff is in the cloud. I think that people use the cloud more than they think. This is coming from a corporate IT guy.

I consider emails or forum posts a far cry from data files that may contain personal information. But, that's a personal thing; to each his/her own. I'm talking strictly personal use here and not addressing the whole enterprise thing where emails can and do contain sensitive corporate information. It's bad enough being in application development, I really feel for the security and network folks. :D

The question to ask yourself is, "Would I care if someone looked at this?" If the answer is no, then cloud storage is ok then. If yes, stay local!

I personally don't have much I'd care if someone saw without my permission. It's just like when someone doesn't change their facebook privacy settings and you can literally see EVERYTHING they have on their profile. EVERYTHING. Now THAT'S a privacy concern if I ever saw one.
