For TOUCH HATERS - SAMSUNG has eye technology

Hi there
To those who say Touch will never have a place on the traditional Desktop I suggest they look at some reviews of the just released GALAXY S4 phone where a lot of the touch screen movements can be done via EYE scrolling technology -- IMO this is a total BALL CHANGING GAME. The technology is in it's infancy but it brings advantages of Touch to large traditional monitors - classical TOUCH is obviously pointless since you are in any case too far away (or should be) from a large monitor to use touch - but controlled by EYE movements --totally different idea.

Take the two monitor scenario -- great idea to switch between the two via EYE CONTROL rather than have to use touch or even a mouse. With the extended desktop on two monitors even better.

Hopefully Windows will incorporate this type of technology too --remember this is only the first iteration of EYE technology by SAMSUNG -- give it some adaptations and we'll soon wonder how we ever got on with out it.

It won't replace a mouse any time soon but certainly for switching applications and for quick scrolling by EYE to the bottom of the document to press say the SEND or SAVE key without using keyboard or mouse would be a small start. A blink for example on the SEND / SAVE key or just looking at it for a certain time would function as if you had pressed the button.

I've posted a link elsewhere on the Forum about the Galaxy S4 phone.

Now Ms let's have a WINDOWS phone to compete.

Cheers
jimbo

Thanks, Jim. I never thought I'd live long enough to see this and other technology. Amazing stuff! We may just have that Apple Crumble for lunch as you mentioned in another thread. :D

Here's a link that has a video as well as an article:

Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled the Galaxy S4 with a bigger screen and software that tracks eye movements as the world’s biggest smartphone seller takes its battle with Apple Inc. to the iPhone maker’s home market.

Interesting. I illustrates that far better things than touch are around the corner. I hope so.

voice is the future

forget the eyes...we've had voice technology for how long....????

military has had it for how long.....????

this IS the 21st century...why in the world are we still using touch screens, mice, keyboards,
remote controls, etc....????

in 1997 we toured DEC's research lab in Cambridge, Mass....total voice control
for the web on screens.....speak a url it went there...all funded by defense dept.

think it's time that the masses should be using it on today's computers/tv's/etc.

"Now my they want me to strain my eyes?! No! Never! I'll stick with my mouse forever until I die!"

We've had touch technology for a LONG time too, it's just never made it to the mainstream PC. We've had voice control technology for ages, since I think the earliest GUI based PCs. That has never been made mainstream on the PC.

Yet those things have been made mainstream on mobile devices, but not anything with the Windows tag on it. Why? Good question.

I've been dictating commands far longer than I've been using a mouse. I've made hand gestures by far longer than using a mouse. I've physically touched things far longer than using a mouse. Why can't a PC be controlled in a natural human fashion? There are better things to be had beyond a mouse.

In other news, Apple will incorporate Facebook directly into their system and call it iOS 7. This will of course make the iPhone and iPad continue to be the best devices ever. First, twitter was incorporated into ios 5 and every tech new site like washable called it the best thing ever. Who cares about eye balling control? Just add apps into the OS and the idiots at mashable will say it's the best ios version ever.

Basically...

That same "functionality" that is in ios 6 (using apps to share content to basically remove a couple of superfluous steps) was the main feature of Windows Phone 7 when it debuted in 2010. But unlike ios where you HAVE to have the app installed and whatnot, all you need on Windows Phone is your facebook login or other social media login and that's it. You have an OS where EVERY sharable item to a social network is just a swipe and tap away.

This is also why I do not enjoy ios at all.

Forget about eye movements, I think they may be too hard to control. What about hand gestures? My desktop has enough computing power to have a program monitor my hand gestures with my webcam. There should be no need to wear a special glove either. I would buy an app like that!

Skymouse puts mouse control on your fingertips

Designed by Los Angeles-based Eliott Ephrati, the Skymouse uses infrared LEDs and an infrared camera to track the movement of "Skymouse Pointers" that are worn on the user's fingers. An algorithm then translates these hand movements into onscreen movements of the cursor.

Thanks, Bill. :)

That's very innovative. What a great idea. A compromise between touch and mouse. Sort of on the order of Kinect.

This may be a worthwhile investment.

Those little pads your finger seem like they could be a bother to put on or take off. What about using a special fingernail polish to do the same trick? That might be Skymouse Version 3.0. :)
