Windows 871 ? Holodeck in Living room

    Hi folks
    Forget desktops etc

Now if I could have say Windows release 871 or whatever it will be called and run THIS at home.

Well it probably would make socializing with REAL people less likely but this would be FUN.

BBC News - Star Trek 'holodeck' in the living room?

Note to all you Ms haters -- Ms is into this stuff in a big way so write them off at your peril.

IBM back in the 60's and 70's used to be pioneers of what they imagined would be future devices -- you hardly hear a squeak from IBM any more as far as new hardware is concerned -- maybe Ms is becoming from purely software into the visionary exciting company that IBM used to be. Good for Ms --this is the sort of project in my younger day I would have LOVED to work on -- hopefully one day I'll be able to try it as a User.

    Cheers

I'm still seeing "Parlor Walls" from Farenheit 451.

It's also not clear if the clever optics only work for one person, presumably standing stationary on the spot marked "X" on the floor?

Wow ! Future certainly reserves cool stuff.

In a decade we'll be running Windows 12 3D x128 with such stuff

    Hi there
It Should work for anybody in the room -- Aircraft simulators can handle both the Pilot and 1st officer plus the instructor so in theory it should work.

Things like Helmets / glasses etc will obviously only work for the person wearing them and they are only a "short term" solution -- I've held off buying a 3-D TV because I found I didn't actually like wearing the glasses -- but I also think 3-D itself is only a "substitute" for a proper holographic experience.

The only thing I might miss would be actually GOING to a real live game at the stadium -- although not having to pay an almost 450 GBP return train fare from Manchester to London would certainly be a great sweetener. The Holodeck could provide the rain, cold, banter of the fans etc -- and possibly even the Lousy Food and expensive watered down beer --horror of hprrors --.

However I mght write to Ms to ask if I can be an early "Tester" for some of this stuff -- it's got to be fun.

    Cheers

It's so mind numbing to think that the Star Trek holodeck converts energy into matter....

The enormous amount of power that would take....
