Five reasons why Windows 8 has failed

A big disappointment for MS fore sure, but Windows 8 has hardly failed. That type of hyperbole just discredits the writer and makes one wonder about his ability to dispassionately view the issue -- and therefore this reader would never trust his analysis/opinions.

You think it is a success then?

Relative to not just 7 but also to Vista it has done badly. That is in spite of an enormous advertising spend, the lower prices for the o/s and continuing slashing prices of the oem devices. I don't know what else you expected him to call it

You guys do know all that person writes about it talking about the failure of things right? Sometimes he writes positive reviews but they are rare. I think we should change the name of this forum to windowsh8teforums.com, I have been on here for the last three days and all anyone does is complain which is amazing since this forum is dedicated to windows 8. Go buy a Mac or install Linux if your that un happy with it. After what I read about Windows Blue I would assume the MS has no intention of dropping Metro which means it is here to stay. So I would just get use to it. I am not a Windows fan boy being that my primary desktop has been Ubuntu since 2008 but recently decided to give Windows another shot and honestly find Metro not so bad, great I would say no but I understand MS point which is to cater more to the consumer.

They don't seem to buying it in large numbers, so if MS is trying to cater to the consumer they are making a mess of it.

I put it to you that is the exact opposite of what MS is doing.

They still have time - if they make a serious effort to cater to the consumer as you put it - they may be able to recover the situation.

This Blue upgrade /whatever it is - may help - if they cater to the consumer.

I hope they do get it right.

I am just saying this doesn't really feel like a Windows 8 forum to me, Windows Blue is just adding more features to Metro and doing some more work under the hood from what I have read so I doubt it will make much difference if that is what holds people back which I am sure it is more of the fact it was to much change at one time. If you don't like it just remember no one makes you use it because there is still Windows 7, Apple or Linux unless you like Windows 8 and are just on the band wagon of complaining.

This is forum - it is for discusiing. Pretty boring if everyone was drooling over the litlle squares.

The reason people are - in your words "complaining" - is because there is plenty not to like about what MS is doing and where they are trying to lead the users.

It is also selling badly - so they clearly have not got it right.

Let me ask you a question. How happy were you when they switched Ubuntu to Unity ??

eh I remember running 11.04 which was not the most pleasant experience but in ways a little different I guess since I understood that I was using a six month release cycle instead of the LTS. By the time 12.04 came out Unity was bullet proof IMO and to this day I find it one of the best tops for my use. As many people thought with the loss of user to Ubuntu during 11.04 and 11.10 they would abandoned Unity but with time of polishing and the fact as far as compatibility Ubuntu being the best many have returned and I believe a similar thing will happen with Windows, that is why I say the complaints are pointless and unheard.

I think the complaints will be heard when M$ sees their business dwindle. They are making a similar faux pas with Office which is their milk cow - but here it is with the Ts&Cs.

In Ubuntu it is different. There is not a lot of business attached to it - maybe now when they go mobile. I went to Mint Mate Nadia and like that UI better than the Unity. And my special pet is Zorin.

I do hope to see them go mobile, the issue I see though is with Windows Phone not keeping up with Android and iphone, manufactures will be hard to put faith into another mobile OS. I only liked Linux Mint with cinnamon but it did not work well with my computer, very glitchy.

Yeah, and then there is Chrome OS now too - another Linux based derivative.

I just downgraded back to windows 7... Took me alot of effort but it was worth it. Unless you have a touchscreen tablet windows 8 is a disaster for anyone trying to be productive. I had various issues with running auto cad efficiently. And my workload effectiveness and efficiency at home decreased by as much as the amount of time I spent looking and aearching for features that used to be right in the open and that are hiding in windows 8. The biggest issue I had with autocad is that auto cad is designed to use the center wheel of a mouse to pan around drawings. But on windows 8, it moves your whole screen out and tries to zoom out. It's impossible to function on auto cad with this design. There are various other problems with this software and windows 8.
My laptop is pretty old from 2010 and I'll have to upgrade to a new work machine in the near future. Every new laptop has windows 8, i can't use it therefor I can't buy a new laptop with windows 8. Microsoft is forcing me to buy a mac.... I do not have any options left. You can't even buy a laptop with windows 7. And if you want windows 7, you have to go through a pain full process of getting downgrade rights.

Yeah, and then there is Chrome OS now too - another Linux based derivative.

I had a chromebook, the first one released in 2011. Wasn't bad but for the web wasn't compatible with a lot of things, one thing that would be nice is if they get Unity Engine support this year, it's a rumor but a hopeful rumor. So let me ask you a question, if Windows 8 sales continue to dwindle and they do not change there path where will users go? Do you think they will go Apple with computers starting at $1200? I know there is a rumor of a Mac for $699, seen this rumor in the past when Apple was working on a netbook that became the ipad. Linux? which has to many flavors for end users to understand and not to mention a whole different look on how things should work. Chromebooks? They are really nice and have a chance but need much more web support. I am just saying I think people will fall for the Windows 8 at the end whether they love it or hate it. I understand all your guys wanting the right to complain and be heard but all I am saying don't we have like 5 threads on this topic already. Not saying your complaining but this community as a whole.

That is the question.

There isn't a viable alternative for most.

The current reluctance towards MS offering leaves them exposed. They must have considered that. I expect they are gambling no one else will step in .

Tim could deal a fatal blow if he does deliver the $699 mac whatever.

It is not impossible the oems could finance a more user friendly Linux desktop thing.

There are reasons why it is hard for Timmy or the oems to do that. There are big barriers. But the potential rewards are huge.

It is important to get the message across to MS among others. To just give in would only encourage them.

Here in the U.S. it will be hard, over in Europe it seems like a nice move to Ubuntu is taking place since in the last year both Asus and hp have jumped on the bandwagon of shipping Ubuntu computer over there. Not to mention I believe Dell sell over there (I know they do here), system 76 and there own small companies like system 76. It will be interesting to see what goes on.

I am not expecting a huge uptake of Ubuntu as it is. The oem offerings you mention will have a market - but I don't think it will be huge.

Perhaps if they get a more user friendly version togeteher and ship it on a fair percentage of oem machines - then it could take off.

Just buy a laptop without a preinstalled OS. It is really that simple.
My country got TONS of them, marked as DOS.

Honestly I don't think they could meake Ubuntu any more user friendly, have you used Ubuntu in the last two year? It would have to literally do things for you to be any easier. All manufactures would have to do is do more advertisement and information about what is compatiable in terms of hardware, ofcourse that also means if manufactures would switch to Ubuntu compatiablity would come with more users.

I upgraded to window 8 pro (64 bits) from window 7 ultimate. Window 8 is faster than window 7 .I really like hybrid shut down and hybrid boot ( it takes 10 seconds). There are many new features in window 8 its a nice upgrade from window 7
