This is absolutely hilarious - and true

I like/agree with this quote (about Modern/Metro at least) from a usability expert:
"Windows 8 is optimized for content consumption rather than content production and multitasking. Whereas content consumption can easily be done on other media (tablets and phones), production and multitasking are still best suited for PCs. Windows 8 appears to ignore that."

And from the same person there's also stuff about the extra "cognitive burden" of Windows 8.

Basically you have to remember more stuff to work across two modes (Desktop and Modern), and (although it's not mentioned) you have to remember more when you're working across multiple applications in full screen rather than in windows where you can see both applications at once.

Yes, it has gone viral.

Very funny.

Not sure if there a couple or three on this forum who won't find it so.

I watched the entire video today and I have to admit he touched on numerous areas that I have experienced and heard time and time and time again.

Sure, in a few areas he might be overly dramatic, or a little over the top....but I truly think it is the response that most people will have. Things are not intuitive, I've said that over and over and over again. You have to read, you have to scour the web, you have to come to forums such as these for things like 1). How do I power off 2). How do I close an application 3). How do I get the start menu back...and the list goes on and on and on.

The Windows key on the keyboard? Yep, I was always a non user of this key. Most useless key on the keyboard as far as I am concerned. Except with Windows 8, I have to use this key a ton to retain my sanity.

And I loved when he threw up the icons that represent a handful of programs on older OS's and then thows up the new obscure Windows 8 tile versions and wants you to identify the purpose in mere seconds. It's so dead on.

Anyway, thanks for posting this video. Just gives me a good warm fuzzy feeling that I'm not just the old curmudgeon who simply hates anything that is new (as some have accused), but others feel very similar to how I feel.

I am not one of the old dinosaurs from the days of dos.

That is the kind of statement sometimes used to dismiss the most experienced and expert users as irrelevant and out of touch.

That doesn't make me like w8.

Not just because of the bizarre UI.

That is a symptom of the disease.

The disease itself is far more dangerous.

It is a curious thing.

Your GP might be reasonably young still.

He will defer to the consultant.

The consultants are in their 50's , 60's with many years of experince. ( I have a friend who became a consultant at 48 - but that is unusual ).

They are the people who know.

Yet when it is a consumer product - there can be an attempt to rubbish those who know. Why do you think that is?

Could it be precisely because they know.

They can often quickly tell if the product is good or bad, an improvement or a step back.

I think the author hits the nail on the head, when says Windows 8 is not very user friendly for the person who is using it for the first time. I remember thinking the exact same thing he mentioned, "How the heck do I do this?" and not being able to figure it out until I searched the web using good old Windows 7. I just voted on a poll on this forum on whether I found Windows 8 easy to use and I had to say no. It appears though that I am in the minority. Go figure. Maybe its because I don't own a tablet, smart phone, etc. and it is easier for those that do (the majority of you), than it is for someone like me who went straight from a Windows 7 desktop experience.

Yeah Jay, when I started with the CP, I was pretty lost too. But eventually got the hang of it. I then made a series of 10 little video tutorials to help the poor souls who just started. Here are the first two of that series:

W8 - 1 Introduction & Boot - YouTube
W8 - 2 Start & Apps - YouTube

Remind you - those were very early days.

Nice job on the videos Wolfgang! :thumb: I could have used them last summer, when I first tried out Windows 8. Although I can make my around the start screen now, I have chosen to install ex7 for win 8, which allowed me to import the familiar Windows 7 start menu.

For me, Start Screen > Start Menu. :)

Seriously, I don't know if the amount of research I've had to do in order to learn the ins and outs of Windows 8 is any greater than with previous versions. I've had to look things up before, and sure, I admit, that's still the case. Not everything in Windows is just going to stare you right in the face and be unequivocally, 100% obvious.

I think I can say, objectively, yeah, maybe there is a little learning curve with Windows 8. But it just doesn't seem like that big a deal to me at this point, now that I know how things are done. I'm so used to moving my mouse to the edges of the screen that I almost don't even have to think about it anymore. I don't know if I can blame Microsoft for what they are doing, that is, their expansion into mobile computing. Can they ignore it? Is it wrong to want to consolidate their operating systems to make things more straightforward for their users?

I wouldn't want to go back to 7. But at any rate, I thought this was an interesting and well-made video.

I had the Youtube page from the OP as an open tab in my browser when I closed it... and when I re-opened the browser yesterday it played again.

Is it just me that gets an advert for Chromebook at the start of the video? ;)
