Hey everyone. I've been curious - who has been around long enough for the older stuff, and how you might view them today, listing your favorites first and your least favorites last. I'll start:

Windows Vista
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows 98 SE
Windows 95 Plus

As for "how you might view them today". Well, although 95/98 are at the bottom of the list, I undoubtedly had the most fun with these OS's, as this era of computing was probably the most fun and exiting period. Ah, memories.

Dos - I had to put this one at the top because I remembered I was using dos 4 or 5 (not sure which one) and then came dos 6.11 and I was so excited when I got it, I have never been that excited about an OS ever since just made me laugh this morning thinking about it
Windows 8
Windows 7
Windows Vista
Windows ME
Windows XP
Windows 98 SE
Windows 95 Plus
Windows 3.11

Until Windows ME I was always jumping to DOS less so for the rest of them because most of the programs I had could only run on DOS , Anyone remember DOOM lol

8-While not a bad OS, worst out of the bunch.

I could have included apple OSes but decided not to. I've used some newer and older apple computers, but never paid attention to which OS version I was using. Oldest computer I touched was in my geometry teacher's classroom. She had lines of old apple computers with this really cool tank game I can't recall the name to. All I know is you had to aim and lobby a projectile at a castle or something. Kept me from my studies :)
That was all those things were good for in today's terms. No clue what they did when they first arrived on the scene.

Also remember our first computer at home was apple. Only thing it was good for were the preinstalled games and the screen saver. yep. It had mickey mouse, goofy and what-not painting a mess of the screen and falling off a window washer. Then it died and we went to Windows (XP). I was a kid, so my parents must have used it for something probably a little more profound.

Well I used a whole lot over the years.

Windows 7 - Best for me by a fair bit since 2000
Windows 2000 - Stable and just got on with it.
Windows 8 - Early days but quick and stable and growing on me. Taken some getting used to, but I now use it as main desktop.... with some changes and a lot of sorting out. However, not since my initial flirt with Vista have I considered rolling it all back so often. Is that contradictory enough!!??
Windows XP - Mostly just did its job.
Windows 98 - Better
Windows 95 - Broke too easily
Windows Vista - Was fine after first service pack.....mostly. Least liked by a mile of the post 3.11 stuff.
Windows 3.11 - briefly. This is last as it wasn't a patch on what came after.

I missed millennium.......is that a sin?:zip:

Voodoo............:D

Windows 8, incredibly WHOA! That was the VERY first thing when I first installed Windows 8 Developer Preview and it booted into Start, "Whoa!"

Windows Phone 8, it's like Windows Phone 7, but better!

Windows Phone 7, I literally fell in love it. I never actually knew about it until I realized apple won't be doing anything interesting or innovative with the iphone and android to me is just a dog that ate its own poop. I even remember how I discovered it. I was researching info on the latest rumors of the new iphone to see if it would be worthwhile, it wasn't. Feeling exasperated, I was looking at my Windows 7 Desktop with the start menu opened thinking, "I like using Windows, doesn't Microsoft have a smartphone operating system?" They do, and the whole concept of putting PEOPLE, first and at a glace information with Live Tiles just really interested me. Later, I installed the Windows Phone SDK, and the only thing I went through was the All Apps list and the Settings menu, sold I was! Waited out for the best Windows Phone, which was the Nokia Lumia 900 (originally wanted the 800 but that didn't make it to the US) and still love it. I should be getting the 7.8 update soon.

Windows 7, rather pretty. It was like vista, but it worked! My goal at that time was to eradicate every possible instance of vista.

Windows xp, I used it for WAY too long than I wanted to, mostly because I didn't want to buy a new PC to run vista. Did its job pretty well, but holy security updates! I forgot how many there were until I popped it into a VM one day with SP2 preinstalled, and had to install roughly 100+ security updates, just all security updates and probably a dozen performance ones. Then SP3, then MORE security updates!

Windows vista, I skipped it as it was just a constipated dog that ate its own vomit. It was SUCH a pain to maintenance and troubleshoot some of the PCs that ran it at first launch, and even after SP2.

Windows 95, my first and earliest Windows version I ever used. The '90s were such awesome times! At the time, 95 was like the Windows 8 of UIs and PC technology. It changed the GUI for the overwhelmingly better and made computing what it is today. It had its issues, but that's what happens when old code from DOS is used to run an advanced GUI. I recently watched this cheesy video that was a video guide to Microsoft Windows 95 (remember when people just to call things that, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer?) It was weird to look back on how plug and play operating of devices meant having to exit Windows, manually turn off the PC with a kill switch usually in the back, plug in the device (giant ports galore), boot up the PC, pop in the driver CD after Windows recognized the new device, install the drivers so Windows knows what to do with it and what it is, and if it was a printer you had to go through a wizard to finish it off. Holy steps! Now, with Windows 8, you literally can just take a device and plug it in and seriously most of the times have that device, from a wireless adapter to printer, be working and functional in a few seconds. Plug and play!

I remember when plug and play first came around and we referred to it as plug and pray.

I came from the Commodore days, had 286s, 486s, DOS 5 and 6. Avoided Windows as much as possible and did whatever possible in DOS. anybody here remember word perfect 6 for DOS with its tui interface?

I started on the C64 then progressed thru the Amiga to the PC. First OS was DOS6.0/Windows 3.1. I own most versions of Windows since then (missing NT 3.51, Win 2000 and 1 or 2 others), and several versions of DOS, not all by MS. I have actually just set my newly-acquired Win NT 4 up in Virtual-Box and quite enjoyed the chance to play with it. It's only SP1, but a bit of ratting through 20-odd years-worth of CD-ROMs produced most of the service-packs, plus a stack of updates and additions for my WfW 3.11 and Win 95 setups. I just knew there was a reason I kept them. As for a favorite, I don't really have one, probably 7. The only one I avoided was ME, but today I have it running quite happily on my P4 without a worry except for some (minor) driver issues.
Wenda.

8 - loved it, although it's a bit too flat.
7 - liked the glass, although the stripes are ugly.
Vista - Never actually used it as a full-time OS, just used it on the school library computers.
2003 - Loved the stability and performance to play games
2000 - The Real NT with XP kernel (NT 5.x)
XP - putted it in here because of its boring appearance and too many usage (School Computer Lab, School Server, etc)
98SE - The Best Windows 9x
95 - The Revolution of GUI
Me - Hated it! On VM it always hangs and blue screens.
