Hi there
Just interested when time comes for people to change phone contracts or upgrade their devices how many will think of switching to a W8 phone or continue to use Android.

I love the Samsung Galaxy IIIs but I need a second (pay as you go this time) phone where I can use a simcard from Belgium. Holland etc when I'm in those countries.

The security (non existent) when using public Wi-Fi on android phones worries me if I want to start using the phone for financial transactions --online banking / online purchases etc.

W8 seems to be much more secure for these types of applications and the new W8 handsets look quite good as well.

One thing is for sure I Won't be getting an Iphone.

Cheers
jimbo

I switch from Android to a Nokia Lumna 920 WP8 last fall. Best phone I've had and do enjoy using WP8. Easy connecting with my Exchange server, nice to have Office handy for the occasional document look-up and the Nokia Drive app is a killer.

This is a brilliant post; impeccable timing. About two months ago I switched from using an "Android HTC One X". Instead, I got the new "Windows Phone 8 Lumia 920". I love this phone, seriously; this is the best phone I've ever owned.

Unlike Android, it "feels" clean. I can and have uninstalled the extra bloatware that my carrier installed on it without having the need to "root" or "unlock" it. Just by holding it, you can feel that it's quality made. I really like the live tile interface, it feels so minimalist and smooth. Nokia is known for "brick" phones and this is no different.

You know how the first time you turn on your Android device, look at all apps and how it's filled with tons of apps you'll never use? The W8 Phone doesn't have that. But there's one downside to W8 Phones, the lack of apps. Microsoft store does not contain applications like Android or iOS. The selection is very limited and it's very likely that you won't find the apps that you want on a W8 Phone. I do hope this changes.

And one more thing, since using the Lumia 920, I'll never use an Android device again; too bloated and the GUI is "messy".

I did. I switched from Android to "Windows Phone 8 HTC 8X". Bought it at the releasedate. It was the best decision I made after buying Windows 8 for my pc. I'm really loving WP8!!!

For me it all comes down to this ==> IT JUST WORKS!!

Now I can type a very long post about the fact that Android sucks and why I think it does. And why I love Windows Phone. But I won't bother you all with that ;). Let's just say that Microsoft really did a FINE job developing this phone OS.

If you buy a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone (there are several to choose from, the 620 might be better suited as a secondary phone as it has lower end specs but packs a dual core processor and a sub 300 dollar US price tag), there is an app called Transfer my data that I've read works real nicely. It takes your text messages and contacts and just copies them over to their proper locations in the Messaging hub and People hub via the Bluetooth.

I'd honestly suggest Nokia above the others as they continually work on developing Windows Phone apps specific for Nokia phones as well as porting apps to work better than some apps in the marketplace. For example, the Weather Channel app on other Windows Phones is ok. On a Lumia, the Weather Channel app from Nokia is VERY well done.

Also, Windows Phone doesn't have a huge selection of apps, yet. Microsoft is still working on getting the top 46 out of 50 ios and android apps onto Windows Phone. The HUGE plus of Windows Phone however, is that everything that would had required an app on ios or android is seamlessly built into the OS as a feature, not a third party app. Bing Music is one, it replaces Shazam. Live tiles reduces the need of having to open the apps individually, instead you can scroll through and see new feeds. And what's also nice is the Hub feature, which consolidates down what you need pinned or have to access. Like, the Nokia Music app (VERY terrific by the way) gets grouped in the Xbox Music+Video hub. Cinemagraph (a VERY awesome Nokia exclusive app) gets grouped into the Photos hub. It's just legit!

Hi there
I'm not "App mad" but as I said it would be a secondary phone -- I've still got the Galaxy IIIs if I need to know what the weather is like on Planet Mars or all the other zillions of Android apps.

Basically the only Apps I'd need on a phone are essentially some with travel info ( Planes, train times in Eur / UK etc), Google Maps, basic email, accu weather, a decent browser, a couple of stock price charts / notifications, Music player and Sky Go.

Windows 8 looks like it could do these just fine. I could even do without the music player and Sky GO as I have these on the Galaxy anyway.

Accessing online Banking or buying goods from the Internet would also be where I'd probably want to use W8 phone -- I just don't trust Android enough for these type of transactions when using a public Wi-Fi system such as in a Bar or Café. --It's not the Bank's website or the online store that's a problem but these days without some type of Real Time A/V protection your phone could easily become the target of things like Drive By attacks etc -- and Android just leaks like a sieve when security is considered.

Anyway thanks for the info here --looks like W8 phones are getting decent reviews and will start to shake up the market really soon.

Cheers

I just got my android galaxy s3 around 4 months ago through work. I am on a 2 year contract before I am eligible to switch. I'm totally satisfied with android and haven't considered a switch. Wife just got an s3 too, and she only looked at iPhone or android. She didn't even look at a Windows based phone..even though I suggested that she might want to at least take a look.

I much enjoy Android; I'm a developer and CONSTANTLY changing my Android device, but Windows Phone still amazes me. I'm currently using an AT&T Samsung Focus 1st gen, yes unlocked and using it here in Australia. Recently unlocked it (Windows Phone rooting) and installed Windows Phone 7.8 with Nokia stuff in it... it is amazing, I can assure you. Everything down to the Nokia WP Ringtone to the Nokia Blue accent color ;oo

As for Android, I'm currently using an Alcatel One Touch 995 and a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, both rooted and running custom roms.

Then to be retro, I've always got my HTC HD2, still kicking and dual booting Android and Windows Phone, with Ubuntu as an option on its SD card :)

That's why it has a sucky opinion against it. There is a VERY small population of android users that actually know how to root and such. Most people what go to buy a phone will buy whatever the salesperson recommends over if they can root the device or not. I'll dual booting to my PC....

Can't use the "Quote" option on my iPod for some reason, first time it's messed up like this :l

But yeah, the HTC HD2 is an amazing device, 9th one I've had so far (fixing them up/some have died completely) and to think a Windows Mobile 6.5 device can run almost anything in the world is insane! Android, Windows Mobile 4/5/6 Windows Phone7/7.5/8, Meego, Ubuntu, Windows 95/98/XP/RT, any linux distro, and even Mac OSX if you have a specially baked version.

And with the sucky opinion thing on Android, I do agree with you. The majority of users don't know how to root an Android smartphone or do any tweaking, and the default Android look on FroYo/Gingerbread is terrible compared to iOS or Windows Phone. Android IceCream Sandwich and Jellybean are a lot better looking, but people still do prefer mobility without having to tweak it like crap before they can.

EDIT: Link personally removed.

EDIT2: Just noticed that "advertising" breaches the forum rules. Considering posting a link to another forum is technically advertising, the link to XDA has been taken it out. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It was rooted. A custom ROM running on the HTC One X. It was a good ROM that allowed a lot of customization and removal of bloatware. But I still don't like Android based on my experience.

Hi there
Anybody had a go with the Samsung Windows phone -- it's about the same size as the Galaxy IIIs and same processor in it.

Just wondering if one could actually load the Samsung Windows OS on to a Galaxy IIIs -- where I am all phones are by law "Unlocked" even if you DO have a contract with any particular provider so we don't need to jail break them.

It would be great also to be able to "Dual boot" a phone --with the ext sd card should be fairly OK to do with a Custom Rom as you can mess around with these apparently on an unlocked phone.

Cheers

I would not recommand the Samsung Ativ Windows Phone. Can't find the link anymore, but I've read that the ONLY reason Samsung is having a Windows Phone in their portfolio is that by doing so they won't have to pay MS for using some code on their Android phones. In other words, they don't care if it sells or not, because it costs more NOT to have a WP in their portfolio.

Besides that Samsung really ****ed me, and 10 of thousend other users in The Netherlands with me, with my last Android Phone. The killed it with a softwareupgrade. Acknowledged that they've killed it, and wouldn't repair it due to the fact that "the model was older then 6 months so I would just have to buy a new one". By doing that they lost me as a customer and made an enemy out of me!

My wife and daughter each have the same Android phone (HTC Inspire) and when my AT&T contract was up last November, I got rid of my much-hated iPhone 3GS and got the Nokia Lumia 920 and I've never looked back or regretted my decision. Our Android phones are just too "flakey", although the latest update improved things a bit.

Both my wife and I just reupped and got the Nokia Lumia 920's. Great phones. I had a Galaxy S before and ROM'd the crap out of it, everything from GB to ICS, rooted debloated, changed icons, tried all the different launchers (ADW, Espire, Launcherpro etc) the wife had an infuse (I did alot of roming on it as well). when it was time for upgrade, I really was pulling for the Note because I was used to Samsung and the Roms were already ready to go. My wife got here Nokia first, and I played with it just a little (she horded it like Gollum, walking around talking about her precious....) Well needless to say I got the Nokia as well. No you can't Rom it, or anything like that, and the app store is missing some things that I liked, but I can say I didn't make a bad choice for sure. It's solid, runs great, has good battery life, no random shut downs (wifes did, they exchanged it. haven't had a problem since) I am kind of enjoying the simplicity of it where I don't have to figure out what happened to my IEMI or backup my EFS folder or any other random crap that I delt with before and damn the camera is freaking amazing!!!

The only thing I don't like is there is no file explorer on the phone itself, that is really the only gripe I have....

That's my 2 coppers on it anyway :)

Geeve

Well I decided I would give Microsoft & Nokia a chance to show me what they can they :)
I am not asking for the fastest or superior phone. I just want a stable phone that doesn't glitch out, lose contact information, or other important stuff.
I order a Black Nokia Lumia 822 with Verizon wireless, if I am unhappy with it I will be stuck with it for another 2 years and my next phone is likely to be BlackBerry if they look ok in two years, because I don't want to be in Apple eco-system, and frankly I want to see more improvements in Android OS.
