Were these touch AIO PCs by any chance?

They are not touch...they specifically got models that were not touch. They are pavilion 23s.

Interesting. Dell makes AIO non-touch PCs. What was the reason for the specific purchase of the HP's, out of curiosity that killed the cat?

Unsure, it is just what I was told to buy for a tradeshow. They referenced a model sold in Australia (where HQ is)..and said get 4 of them just like this one.

Well, in a funny change of events, our CEO stopped by to see the machines for the tradeshow and was shocking that they were not touchscreens. That's what he wanted, but somebody screwed up his order and by time it got to me it was non touchscreen versions that were ordered.

So, we had to ship back the HP's and because our trade show is nearly here we had to order some replacements ASAP, we had to buy whatever we could find and have shipped.

We got Acer Aspire 5600U's, 23" touchscreens, Windows 8, Core i3-3110m's, 8GB of RAM and 1TB hard drives. The touch screens work fine, but I don't find myself leaving the mouse and keyboard though to touch the screen much. And they have a shiny finish (glass edge to edge) and they fingerprint terribly...which has been the most common complaint from those who have stopped over to have a look.

I'm annoyed that I cannot touch the lower left corner and bring up the Start screen though. I have to either pull out the charms bar to touch Start, or use the Windows key on the keyboard. That has been my #1 question is how to bring up the start screen on the touchscreen.

    See, everyone wants touch!

I've not really noticed AIO screens smudging so much, maybe it's the glass that is used. I know with the HP touch AIOs, they seem not to smudge so much. I'm kind of thinking they might use Gorilla Glass 2 or something along those sorts as on the Nokia Lumia 920 it doesn't smudge as bad as the 900, which has Gorilla Glass 1 and not 2 like the 920. But considering the average keyboard and mouse is more filthier than the average toilet.....I'll take the touchscreen and some rubbing alcohol mixed with distilled water.

The Charms bar is how you get to Start with touch by the way, swipe and tap. It's easier than trying to hit a smaller target on the Taskbar. It's also a blast of have a number of apps open and walk your fingers on the left side of the screen to switch around.

But that only applies to the new immersive apps thought, right? I don't use any Metro apps, so that doesn't seem to do anything in my case.

Our experience is that the concept of touch is AWESOME. People are like, "woah, are those touch, I want one of those". After about 10-15 minutes playing with it, most have said, "it's ok....but....." and then I have had a myriad of excuses.

A few people though seemed to want to type everything on an onscreen keyboard and some apps didn't even work with an onscreen keyboard and they were disappointed that they could not type on the screen. So yes, everybody is different.

I think it's a Windows policy that only lets you make it once. It's all my laptop let me do, and It's a Lenovo. Unfortunately the system didn't let me know that you can only make it once. The option to create the dvd was still there, but it was only after I tried to use it that it lets me know that you can't create another copy.

I'm not a fan of HP at all, but in this case they got one detail better than Lenovo. My experience was 2 years ago, so hopefully they have more communication about that now.

The app switch applies to metro apps, you're missing out!

Onscreen keyboards on AIO PCs I find aren't ideal, they're more suited for the tablet form factor than anything. A physical keyboard is what I would use.

What were the apps that couldn't be used with the onscreen keyboard? If you needed to search in the app with the touch keyboard, it gets invoked by swiping open the Charms and hitting Search.

Windows 8 is simple, but complicated to use it seems.
