Windows RT has been jailbroken, you can now run un-signed code

Circumventing Windows RT’s Code Integrity Mechanism « On the Surface of Security

Well then ladies and gentlemen, someone has figured out how to jailbreak Windows RT! You know how Microsoft has said Windows RT WILL NOT run Desktop software and is limited to Office 2013? There is no actual technical reason for that, it's an artificial separation! Windows RT has a value that prevents Desktop software from being installed or developed that isn't of Microsoft it seems.

It also seems, from the hacker has said, RT is a clean port over of Windows 8. Which backups my assertion that it should had been called Windows 8 RT. The hacker has changed that setting on the Desktop to allow unsigned software to be installed. I guess he also has been able to install, INSTALL, traditional Desktop software on RT! This needs to be seen FOR SURE.

 :what:

This is showing a couple of things.

First, Microsoft is obviously serious about moving away from the Desktop UI. This will mean that the new metro apps have be designed in such a fashion to effectively replace that UI. A rumored feature of Windows Blue, the update for Windows 8 later this year theoretically, is featuring a newer app model. It's been said that Microsoft won't accept apps for Windows 8, but for Blue. This could mean something of a better snapping method, or windowing model.

Also, this also shows why Microsoft was SO involved with Windows RT tablets. Some OEM internal sources have recently said how Microsoft was really involved in the design and software and driver development and making well sure that they're top notch and don't have software crap on them. This raises the question of why they were so involved? Because Windows RT seems to be the new type of platform they want to pursue for the future, and seems they have some things up their sleeves in the future as well.

I'm starting to wonder in the whole grand scheme of things, if this represents a change in the Windows code/kernel. Microsoft has recently compiled a MinWin kernel around when vista was being developed; which is like a modular Windows kernel that has been totally mapped out from what I understand. Windows 8 has THOUSANDS of MinWin references over vista and 7 combined. I think the idea was that if a newer networking stack was coded, it would be REAL easy to swap out the old stack from Windows and replace it with the newer one and it would make development overall LOADS easier, better, and faster. Which also allows Steve Ballmer's demand of a new Windows version every two years.

This is some real interesting crap right here! I think I've recently read that BlueStacks was being developed for Windows RT to run android apps. Also, a Russian developer has claimed he has an x86 emulator that can run Desktop software somewhat decently. And, this also kind of means Windows RT isn't a wimpy platform, it's a Windows 8 on ARM, Windows 8 RT. Seriously, they really should had named it that!

Of course, you have to remember that this doesn't mean that you will be able to run your traditional x86 (32-bit) applications.....it would have to be an ARM compiled application.

Unfortunately, people think their old desktop software will work. This is not the case. However, newly compiled ARM based software that is unsigned could be used, if this hack is employed. Perhaps down the road there could be an x86 emulator.

Based from what I read from the article, MS already included x86 emulator in Windows RT (Like WoW64-Itanium).
The Jailbreak means that unsigned x86 Program might work. It is not an architectural limit.

I don't think that is correct, otherwise an Arm based version of office would not have been necessary.

I'm also starting to see WHY there is a Windows RT version for ARM and why Microsoft is so interested in it...

Qualcomm just announced a quad core ARM processor running at speeds of 2.3GHz with again, low power consumption. Rather impressive. In about four to six years, the ARM processor went from a single core, under 1 GHz and not terribly power efficient for the performance into a quad core, 2.3Ghz power efficient processor. Meanwhile, the Intel Atom processor and i-series processors still need to be taken under 7 watts and more for the Atom to be a good contender against the ARM processor.

And what better way to future proof Windows for said phenomenon to occur when ARM is right against x86 processors? Windows RT.

Here is Paul Thurrott's view of the RT jailbreak:

http://winsupersite.com/windows-rt/windows-rt-jailbreak-silliness

Microsoft will just simply put in a patch to block it. Of course that'll just simply lead to yet another cat mouse game of patch and then trying to break the patch, just like in iOS.

I would really like to see a jailbreak for Windows 8. It would be nice if they could just put a little bit of the 3-D features back from Windows 7 into the desktop.

Agree, since W8 is a mobile OS why not jailbreak it?
