Somebody is doing fine - no problem with sales for these guys:

Apple and Google likely have a lot to be happy about following this year’s holiday season. According to data recently released from mobile app analytics firm Flurry, the two companies combined to activate 17.4 million devices on Christmas Day. That’s good for a 332 percent increase over the average number of activations in December and more than 2.5 times more than on Christmas Day a year ago.

We don't have the figures for anything to do with win8.

It's pretty clear Apple and Google are doing ok in the current economic climate.

I don't think Stevie B will want to go until he has a success under his belt.

He probably won't want to retire after being called the world's worst CEO by none other than Forbes.

I am not sure that is entirely fair - who knows who is responsible at MS. Maybe the departure of Stevie S has drawn fire.

Perhaps the next version of windows will be ok - then Stevie B can bow out gracefully.

Meanwhile...

Windows is the most used OS in the world, Windows 8 is doing ok, Windows 7 is the most used. The Xbox sold about 750 million consoles Black Friday alone, continuing a 22 month sales streak. Office is the most popular and preferred Office software, with few signs that google docs or anything else can chip away at it, as there are a few different ways to use it.

And no one is buying desktop PCs anymore. All laptops. Which, oddly enough, touch AIO PCs seem to be doing better than touch laptops or tablets. OEMs report that their touch PCs are selling faster than their non-touch PCs.

And what the Xbox sale have to do with the Surface sales ? But let's talk about it, you know why the Xbox and iPad is so popular, it's because Balmer let the Xbox team work my them self. This is not what happen with the Courier tablet, Balmer put them stick in the wheels, If the team have continue to work on the Courier, thing may have be different today. Even Gates was working on tablets a long time ago. Balmer is the problem, it's time he go. For now the shares of Microsoft are deep flat, they don,t go down, but they don,t go up too, shares holders expect to make money, they don't loose money but they don't make money too. The way it'S going with the sales of surface and Windows 8, shares can only go down. and the shares holders will cut the head of Balmer for sure, cause the one who own MS shares want stability and will not accept lost. Microsoft can't just sit on their past Windows and Offices success they have to make innovation or else someone will kick their A$$ for sure.

Courier tablets sound nice, but ultimately redundant as OneNote works the same.

Ballmer is the problem and has been for Microsoft for a while, but this is literally the first time I've seen since he's become CEO that Microsoft is getting their crap together for once. We'll have to have see what will happen in the next few years how this turns out.

As for Surface sales, have people completely disregarded other PC sales? When did it all of a sudden become that a PC equates to Surface tablets and ultimately Windows 8? Every logically thinking person understands they're not selling like hot cakes because they came onto the market TWO MONTHS AGO!! Not everyone even knows Microsoft is building tablets, let alone where they are to buy them. They're just now at best buy stores, physically within the stores, not just online. 2013 will show whether or not they're doing well, as the Surface RT and Pro will be sold in more stores other than Microsoft's 70 or so physical retail stores versus the several thousand best buys and Staples.

I can't listen the TV 5 minutes without see the stupid Surface ad, so I wonder who don't know about it ?

anyway it's not enough to say I will buy a Surface, did you buy one Coke ? Microsoft need peoples who actually purchase them, and the peoples who give a nice iPad to their kid this Xmas, will not purchase a Surface next month for sure, Sales are dead after Xmas. Then will come the spring, the summer, so you have to wait at least fall. Even more stupid they launch the Pro, when everyone will receive their CC Xmas bills , Peoples will have to pay their CC, loan, rent car and more before purchase a Pro.

That's not to say that people ACTUALLY know that they are. Seeing an advertisement is one thing, gaining knowledge from it is another...

I haven't bought one yet, as I'm waiting for the Pro to be released next month until I make that decision. Even then, I probably won't be buying a tablet PC until next year, as I don't have an urgent need for one. I'm dedicating time, money, and resource into building a new desktop PC designed for Windows 8 and everything in one.

Rumor has it that apple is preparing for the ipad five something early next year. There is a fear that they might start releasing products every 8 months versus a year, which will end up being second guessing their decision when something better is down the road.

But that doesn't go to say that people might actually return their Christmas ipads for Surface Pros. There is a like a 30 day return guarantee, by which the Surface Pro might actually be released just in time. I would give a kid an ipad, it's a child's toy. A Surface Pro on the other hand is a manly adult toy. Fall 2013 is probably when sales will kick up, that's usually how it's gone in the past. I personally never saw demand for Windows 7 until April 2010 and died off this past summer. Windows 8 will probably go that route, it won't be in demand until later, when people decide to upgrade. Most don't usually do it once a new Windows version is released, until later. Some wait until Service Pack 1, which won't be happening for Windows 8.

Ok. Let's talk about it. I'm sure Coke will join in.

First off, you can bet your sweet bippie that Gates continues to be very much in charge, even though he's semi-retired. He's just off doing things with his wife. After all, he is chairman of the board of directors. Balmar is just a glorified manager. Basically he puts the right people in the needed positions and reports back to Gates and the rest of the board.

Why did Courier fail? Good question. The official statement by MS is that the project was for research. They indeed had a working model that was quite interesting. A folding tablet with pen. Too business oriented IMO. They decided to scrap it in 2010. I think it wouldn't have held a candle to the iPad, so they went on with the idea of writing 8 with the Surface in mind. Surely and sorely a timing mistake for sure. I don't think it was strictly a Balmer decision. It was Gates and the board.

Also, never doubt the power of iMe Company and the "fashion statement" image they created that brain-burns consumers. Does the famous 1984 Super Bowl commercial come to mind? "American Hollywood" BS IMO.

What does Xbox sales have to do with the Surface sales? Nothing except that it shows MS is and can be diversified and that it has put out quality hardware along with software, which they can succeed at again. One only has one chance to get it right. Perhaps that's another reason for canceling the Courier. Shifting gears with a better plan to create 8 for the "trifecta" of devices. A much better long term plan IMO.

I have always stated that "transitional" OS 8 and the Surfaces will be a slow go out of the gate. I'm afraid MS has an uphill battle for reasons of the negative press and iPad mania. I think they will do well in the long term.

Why MS stock flat? Why is Apple stock declining? I think investors have more confidence in the MS plan. They are more diversified also. They may loose in one division, but make it up in others. I think MS stock will start rising by no later than next autumn, although I'm not a professional in investments. Therefore, don't count on my forecast.

So why they can't produce a phone and a tablet that peoples actually purchase ? And why they produce an OS that alienate so much peoples ? I know Windows 8 , why I own a iPad and I purchase an Android last week ? Why a big time Windows user turn around this time ? As I said the Xbox is a success because the Windows teams was not in the way. This company is like a government, to much paper work, meeting and bla bla bla.

If the sale of Surface was good you will see Balmer on every talk show to talk about it, Instead he hide. Forget Gates, he is on another mission.

MS sold 40Mil + copies of 8. Slow out of the gate IMO. Surface will be also. You post statements on the way you see things and what you bought. You seem to think that MS is a failing corporation simply because you think 8 is a failure. Please give me hard facts.

Speaking of such, Bill Gates actually ultimately killed the Courier project because Ballmer couldn't decide on it. It's been reported that it was killed because it couldn't email. A tablet that is just a digital notebook..... This is essentially OneNote on a tablet PC, or preferably OneNote MX.

I believe apple's stock is declining because investor's are realizing apple isn't being its innovative self anymore. Their founder and leader and innovator and designer is dead. Left in charge is a glorified manager. Who is also a glorified manager? Steve Ballmer. apple is just delivering in volume versus true innovation when compared to its competitors, they're at the bottom of the list or not even in the ballpark. They recently released the iphone 5 in China, where it sold well, but that was altogether the preorders and sold that weekend, not actually that many sold in a couple of days. Nokia actually just launched a special Lumia 920T for the Chinese market, sold out first day in two hours. A refreshment in stock, gone in 20 minutes, with the yellow 920 being sold like hot cakes.

You can't charge a high premium for a product based on a logo, when other's have more value and innovation for the consumer dollar. Once more consumers realize this, investors will leave. It will be bloody ironic if in 2017, apple is nearing death like it did in 1997. Maybe this time, Microsoft won't be the good guy and bail them out and let them fall...

One can only wish....

The Windows Phone 8 handsets are selling well, as recent market share data shows an increase in Windows Phone usage, and I posted this already but in China, the Nokia Lumia 920T is selling faster than anything. Actually, the Lumia 800 with Windows Phone 7 recently beat out iphone usage in China. It's shortsighted for any company to be focused on the US or European markets that are already developed. Asian and South American and Middle Eastern markets are the new territories, of which Windows Phones will make the biggest impact. Nokia has built a 200 dollar dual core Windows Phone 8 handset to be sold in those developing markets. 200 dollars versus almost 600? Do that math.

As for developed markets, Windows Phone still sells. I learned a few days ago that a friend of a friend will be buying the Lumia 920 as she liked using Windows 8 and her friend has a Windows Phone that she likes. She currently uses an iphone. Lots of people use crapdroids running android 2.xx, not a great phone to use. That's good potential to win people over.

Speaking of Ballmer being on TV with the tablets, the Surface RT tablets have been in a few TV shows as product placements, and recently there was this Hollywood gathering where Windows 8 and Surface were at the center. Oprah praises the Surface tablets, some other talk show host had a giveaway of the tablets. Several celebrities have recently switched to Windows Phone 8, notably the Lumia 920. The word is growing, the world isn't going to become a Microsoft world overnight....

Bill Gates is currently doing charity work in Africa in stopping hunger and preventable diseases and raising the standard of living in a neglected part of the world. That, and getting some wealthy people to donate vast amounts of their wealth to charity when they die.
