New Gaming Console - OUYA - Only 99 bucks

Looks like there is going to soon be a new console in town to compete with the Xbox, PS3 and Wii. It's cheap too at 99 dollars U.S. Look for it around March of 2013.

OUYA: A New Kind of Video Game Console by OUYA — Kickstarter

Designed primarily for Indie game developers some Big Names are getting in on the act like the folks that brought Call of Duty and the Square Enix company. The new web based first person shooter Combat Offensive will be ported or run through the cloud for this system. http://www.offensivecombat.com/ The company started this project on Kickstarter to raise money for the system and so far has raised over 8.5 million dollars! The console dev team is made up from many professionals in the gaming industry.

This system is Hackable by design - for those who like to hack the consoles, this is 100% encouraged and hacking this puppy will Not void the warranty! This platform is Open Source! How amazing is that?

This project looks really interesting to me. These folks were only asking the Kickstarter community to come up with about 950 thousand dollars and they have passed that by 8 times. They should have plenty enough money to bring this thing to the table and or re-design this first version to make this console even better. Graphics wise this won't look much better than a Wii but for the price, Indie development, Open Source, Hackable and large AAA game devs all wrapped up in this system it will surly be one to keep an eye on.

    Specifications:

    • Tegra3 quad-core processor
    • 1GB RAM
    • 8GB of internal flash storage
    • HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
    • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
    • Bluetooth LE 4.0
    • USB 2.0 (one)
    • Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
    • Android 4.0
    • ETHERNET! (Announced by Muffi 7/18)

In other words, an Android powered gaming console?

No offence but, that's not anything to complete with Sony and Microsoft's gaming consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360. Android isn't 100% focused on gaming, and you're limited to what Android has to offer in the way of gaming (not a shitload, but enough to get by, not up to standard of modern day consoles by any chance). I'd much rather buy a second hand console then one of these, again no offence.

It might be curiosity that takes over when people see this, but ultimately I would still opt to buy a well known console...

One second thought though, achieving that UI on Android is amazing, whilst coupling it with a wireless controller which probably utilizes Bluetooth, it probably could compete. Still though, it's Android, and there aren't a lot of good ports out there on the Play Store. Don't get me wrong, Android is amazing as I'm an app/rom developer at XDA, but yeah.

Android doesn't have to be 100 % focused on gaming. It's an operating system. It does what you tell it to do. Android is open source and Linux based. Android can be tuned and manipulated to do anything you want it to do. Don't think mobile phone games here - those only apply to mobile phones due to the hardware. This gaming system will be on par with the Wii graphics wise which isn't too bad. The price and power of this thing coupled with big name devs can cause console to beat out sales for PS3 and X-box for many people in this failing US economy.

Remember .kkrieger? This awesome 96 kilobyte sized first person shooter proved back in 2004 that you did not have to use huge resources that required tons of power to make a great game on par with the Unreal engine at the time. If they can make games like this in 2004, those big name devs can make super awesome games for the OUYA in 2012/2013

To me, in comes down to the comfort of the controller in my hand. This is the reason I prefer my 360 to my ps3.

I'm an Android Developer, and I do have to rephrase what I said before. Down to graphics of the games that are on Android, I do acknowledge that the endless possibilities of Android Projects are amazing. But still, I don't believe it would be worth it, plus the look of the controller doesn't look all that comfortable.

Looking forward to seeing what it will be like, though.
