With all the griping about Microsoft-& windows 8 or any Microsoft product, what would happen if Microsoft folded up, and no longer supported any and all of their products and took them off the market. What would people do, they would complain because nothing no longer works and why did Microsoft do that to them. I am and always have been a die hard Microsoft person. I have not had any trouble on any of my computers with Windows products including the new windows 8 pro.

Most of the time, people don't even know what they are doing on their computers, mess them up, and then complain that it is a windows or Microsoft problem.

Another company would rise up to apple, can't see it being Linux because it's not compatible with most Windows Executables, I think we will have someone take on windows licenses and software, I can see Microsoft turning toward Xbox support only, as for existing owners of windows machines, Microsoft will honour any licenses that people have purchased, but fair trading in the UK means that if a company goes under and we have an issue with a purchase then by all rights we can claim the money back from the liquidator under Insolvency Act 1986.

I agree, with both posts. I also am running Linx on another computer. I also use Ubuntu and other OS based programs either on a virtual machine or as dual boots on this one. I find Linx based OS systems are good for some things and Windows based systems are good for others. If someone could build and market both Windows based and Linx based systems on the same Computer then that would surly be a game changer. I will stick mostly with windows based systems I have no trouble with Windows 8 Pro, and am waiting for the new windows Blue to come out which I will certainly load on this system.

The amount of illegal activations of Windows and Office will SKYROCKET! That is for sure!

The mac is far too pricy for most people, and not having a decent Office suite won't help any.

Linux may FINALLY have its year. Ubuntu will most likely be considered a good alternate for the future going. Although it will need to be really user friendlyfied, and make WINE more simple, and dumbing other things down.

Honestly, I kind of think Windows and Office will be pirated for a while, like five years or so. After that, some Linux based OS will emerge and people will start using that mainstream as hackers will have their day at cracking into Windows user data and steal all sorts of personal information, as there is no one to provide the updates and no infrastructure to deploy them through Windows Update. Also, I would bet there will be pockets of former Microsoft developers that will band together, as well as other Windows developers, and provide patches and updates. Theoretically, they could just rebuild a new company with Windows, that is if they can do it within a short timeframe.

Android might start to take hold on the PC, as well as chrome OS.

Yup! Mac is far to expensive for most of people in Indonesia, except for people who likes to show off their iDevices.
Really?
13" MacBook Pro 2.9GHz = 15.799.000 IDR!
15" MacBook Pro Retina 2.6GHz = Rp 30.000.000 IDR! (about $2900-3000)

As a MAJOR contributor to the Ubuntu forum for years (got into that when Vista came out), I wish I COULD say that Ubuntu would then come to the forefront -- but it won't!

Canonical forced Unity desktop on folks long before the Win8 "Tiles" version came out -- and got so much push back from the Ubuntu crowd that, for the first time in a LONG time, Ubuntu fell to second place in the Linux distro ratings!

Of course, some (those disliking Unity) will say that Mint will then come to the forefront because they avoided pushing Unity on folks and stayed truer to the Linux equivalent of the Classic Desktop.

But ... they'll be wrong, too.

WHY?

Because folks don't want a Linux distro that is a free ALTERNATIVE to Windows, one that involves installing and learning NEW applications, ones that have different features and different menus; they want a free VERSION of Windows -- which is what many folks think is there with Wine -- but they're wrong, too. That's what they want -- today.

But in the future, that could be very different. With the hugh popularity of Android smart phones, if I were to put my money on a Windows-replacement, I would bet more on a desktop version of Android. Google has the smarts and the resources to develop this into a major player in the PC arena. But if they do that, I would not be surprised if they made a Retail product out of it (charging $$$ for it).

Well there is Chrome OS which frankly could easily replace all Windows 8 installs. Or at least could replace every Windows computer where Metro was the main user UI.

If all you do is email, web stuff, etc... all you need is Chrome OS. Why even have the entire bloated Windows universe at all?

But then there are the other people that NEED a full featured, windowed, desktop OS and that's what Windows is really GREAT at. If MS were to dissapear and take Windows down with it, I think it would be a toss up between some Linux distro that went 100% commercial and allowed a stable commercial development platform (Seemingly Ubuntu if the Unity stuff doesn't completely take IT down) or Apple. Apple is more stable and commercial friendly so maybe the lean is that way...

But.. lets hope it doesn't come to that!!! :D
