USS Enterprise Taken Out of Active Service

Dec 03, 2012

Associated Press| by Brock Vergakis

NORFOLK, Va. -- The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was retired from active service on Saturday, temporarily reducing the number of carriers in the U.S. fleet to 10 until 2015.

The USS Enterprise ended its notable 51-year career during a ceremony at its home port at Naval Station Norfolk, where thousands of former crew members, ship builders and their families lined a pier to bid farewell to one of the most decorated ships in the Navy.

Though never having to serve on board I got to watch at times the awesome power this ship could put out during the Viet Nam war (1966-1969).

Again another era of my life comes to an end. At present there are ten more carriers in the arsenal.

Since Star Trek first debuted back in 1966, I have often dreamt about what it would be like to travel through space on Star Ship Enterprise. Wouldn't that be so cool!
