Thanks for posting that info, Lee. Good topic. You've brought up some good memories.

How many "Ends of Great Eras" we have lived through! It is a shame in a way. I remember using sets when groing up and being schooled. I'm not the oldest member, but certainly not the youngest. I must admit that I can't remember the last time I saw a set, let alone referencing one. Not since I've had a Internet data connection, I'm sure. 15 years or so? All my research is performed online. Which is the correct information is another story. I usually reference a half dozen places and whatever info matches is usually true.

One thing this leads me to -> I think I'll shell out $40 or so and buy the CD as a Christmas present for myself. It also makes a good idea for buying presents for my grand-children. I usually buy the noisiest toys for them to get even with my children, but the grands are getting a little older now.

BTW, the Limited Edition is $3,995.00 USD verses $39.95 USD for the CD. The books would be nice, but a little pricey for me.

In 1961 (I was 16) my dad shelled out about $750.00 for a set so that his ten children could read about what was happening, and had happen on planet earth. So, for me this is the end of a great publication. But, yes it will go on in the digital world, albeit it is always sad when anything goes away regardless of what it is.

The Internet is the most significant advancement in the world of "publishing" and communications since the invention of the printing press. Think about it, anyone with a PC and Internet access has a voice and can write whatever they want and others can read it instantaneously. This was not possible before...only the rich could afford to publish anything and that's why the people who controlled the "papers" controlled everything! Sad to see encyclopedias go away, I still remember the sets I had when I was a kid, but things change....

That was a huge amount of $ in 1961 dollars, especially when you consider that you could buy a car for a little more than that! Knowledge has always had a price tag, hasn't it? Your father sacrificed to get you those books!

We didn't have the Encyclopedia Britannica at home, but I remember using it for research projects at school.
