It's not spam, because they're not selling you anything. Apart from the fact that you probably agreed to terms and services that allow them to email you when you signed up, they're just sending you emails about Windows 8 (which you already have).

Still, there should be a privacy policy link at the bottom, and in there you can find a link to the communications preferences that allow you to disable these emails.

Just wait, windows 8 is a dedicated advertising platform at every turn. It's likely to get MUCH worse.

This: Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows 8

Is a major app development library. Besides all the email and on-line services associated with Windows 8 that are already spamming you. It'll be pretty hard to get away from as the entire continuous revenue model of Windows 8 is built in from the ground up. It is in fact my biggest concern about Windows 8 as a whole, the unusability of the metro universe for getting work done not withstanding... I spend a LOT of time on my computer to get away from the endless stream of advertising on the TV as it is, if all of that comes to my desktop (and even worse is on screen ALL THE TIME) well, back to books I guess (Till books are gone and all book readers have a dedicated advertising window too which is probably only a few years off...)

It's time to tell Microsoft that this is not acceptable. I sure tried during the beta, but people shouldn't just give up on it now. They need to know that there is a hard limit on how much we will put up with...

I used my Hotmail a/c to email some files into a VM I had running.

When it didn't arrive, I checked the spam folder.

And there it was.

Amongst a carp-load of Windows 8 related emails from Microsoft.....all flagged as spam.

Go figure.

Wait, these are the emails that Microsoft sends to you to show you how to learn the new OS?

Really?

They're not really advertising anything, they're simply showing you what's up and what's new and tips and how-tos. They're not selling you anything. And Windows 8 as an advertising platform, come on! For crying out loud, complaining about adverts at the END of the apps, which by the way are free, is absurd! Oh, you don't like adverts in app versions of FREE INTERNET SERVICES? You must be new to the internet...

Maybe I am just oblivious (wouldn't be the first time ;)) but I can't recall any unusual amount of e-mail from Microsoft as a result of installing Windows 8. Of course I did not actually PURCHASE Windows 8 (got it via TechNet) so perhaps that's something to do with it.

What's so bad about them offering you resources to help you do more with your new operating system? Would you prefer that you get no further information at all, and no guidance regarding other potentially useful resources for Windows 8?

Even MS describe it as Marketing preferences and promotional material.

Those who jumped in to claim otherwise will have nothing to say, I suppose.
