    Hello Binded,

Welcome to the Windows 8 Forums Tutorial Section

    Note   Note
Post New Tutorial - This is located at the upper left corner of the Tutorial Submissions subforum in the VIP Lounge forum, but not while you have a tutorial open. Click on the Post New Tutorial button to create a new tutorial. Here they will be reviewed until approved and moved to Tutorials. If you do not have permission to post here, then you have not reached the "Power User" badge level or higher yet.

For now if you like, you can post it in the Chillout Room first and post back here with a link to it. I'll then review it so you and I can get it ready to be in Tutorials.

Tutorial to change Network Connections from Unidentified in windows 8 to be able to use HomeGroup:

Warning: this will turn all unidentified connections to private you can still have public, private connections
    Read here:
Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8[1]=Networking%20Internet
Note: i had to do this because im using internet connection sharing from one windows 8 system to another system
with ICS it sets the connection that you share too ie. your network ip to and it will list your connection in network and sharing center as unidentified because window does not set a default gateway its sharing your main connections gateway and you cant set two defualt gateways ICS wont work so its just blank.

this is how you change your connection to private to enable HomeGroup

1: First where going to open Local Group Policy Editor:

You can open the Local Group Policy Editor by using the command line or by using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
To open the Local Group Policy Editor from the run box
    • Click WindowsKey+R for run, type gpedit.msc in Run box, and then press ENTER

To open the Local Group Policy Editor from the command line

    • Click Start, type gpedit.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

To open the Local Group Policy Editor as an MMC snap-in

    • Open MMC. (Click Start, click in the Start Search box, type mmc, and then press ENTER.)
    • On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
    • In the Add or Remove Snap-ins dialog box, click Group Policy Object Editor, and then click Add.
    • In the Select Group Policy Object dialog box, click Browse.
    • Click This computer to edit the Local Group Policy object, or click Users to edit Administrator, Non-Administrator, or per-user Local Group Policy objects.
    • Click Finish.

2: Second where going to change a group policy
To edit a local Group Policy object

    • Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
    • In the console tree, double-click the folders to view the policy settings in the details pane.
    • In the results pane, double-click a policy setting to open the Properties dialog box, and then edit the policy setting.

in the console tree where going to navigate to Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Network List Manager Policies

you should end up with a window like above on the right panel will have all of your networks that windows has saved
so we now want to goto Unidentified Networks double click it and change Not Configured to Private.

o i did not see this if i had i could of saved my self alot of time finding this to get the homegroup to work

maybe it should be added as a tip
as with internet connection sharing was the problem that caused my issues of it not getting a gateway

    and the unidentified network
