Do you obey the speed limit?

Do you obey the speed limit all the time or just when the black and white cars are nearby?

Yep, always obey the speed limit. I see no reason why I wouldn't, seeing as you only get somewhere a few minutes faster and waste more gas. I'm a coaster.

There are times though, at the dead of night when no one is around, I will let the throttle all the way open. Like, up to about 130ish miles an hour.

Hah! Click image for larger version I usually drive 250 miles in a work day. My biggest concern if the Highway Patrol has laser radar now. Used to be the only got you by pacing you. But there are always other drivers flying along blindly to get their attention. A Guy

I do. I have never been one to really drive fast, and with the rising cost of gas, you get better mpg by driving slower. And I never have to panic when I see an officer sitting on the side of the road.

    What's a speed limit? LOL

NO, even when black and whites are around. Now if there is a black and white I won't go 10 over obnoxiously. And it depends on which agency it is. If it's Highway Patrol I don't push my luck. But if it's Sheriff or PD on the highway I don't bat an eye. Once in their jurisdiction though I'll keep it at 5-7 over. No obnoxious reckless speeding. I wish Ca would follow Tx and Utah and raise the speed limits on the highways. It's been studied that having everyone at the higher speeds makes it safer then having only a handful going fast with slower traffic causing the problem. I commute 120 miles a day round trip 5 days a week. No one follows the speed limit. And with the way the country is right now the moods of people is short tempered and I see it on the roads.

What are the speed limits in CA currently? We are 70 in Michigan on the freeways...and I couldn't forsee myself going much faster than 75-80 as my RPM's would start getting too high and my gas mileage suffering significantly at these higher speeds.

I love it when the price of gas comes up and people will complain about the price and how much they spend. They debate the benefits of proper tire inflation, or keeping their windows open/closed....but yet they neglect to slow down, drive at the speed limit and limit acceleration. These 2 items will give you more bang for the buck than using Gas Buddy and driving across town to save 4c per gallon on fuel.

Typical Speed limit is 65. Some areas are 70, mostly major freeways. But most people from my observation do 75-80.

Let's see.....I've been driving with license for 45 years. Learned at age 13 on the farm. 57 Ford 1 ton with 3 on the tree. Automatics were a luxury. At 16 with license speed limit in Illinois was 65 on open highways. Get from point A to B in a flash! Now?!! Ugh!! We've gone backwards in metro areas IMO. We were 45 minutes from Chicago loop. Now 1-1/2 hours at best.

Seattle/Tacoma metro the worse I've experienced yet. Worse than Chicago and in Chicago it's only 3 sides to get to as in Seattle.

    Rant over......

I had to learn to slow down! Had my fair share of tickets. I do 5 over. Most people do. Our town most usually allows 10 over. Do 11 and one gets a rotating cherry. Rule of thumb is to go with the flow whether going over speed limit or not.

Cokie! 130?!! All I have can say is BE CAREFUL! We need you around here! I did experience 140 in my buddy's Firebird once. Telephone poles going by faster than one could count! 80 mph in a dual hull boat with twin Merc outboards. Scarry to say the least! The boat wavering back and forth ready to fly and flip at any given moment if air gets underneath. Both experiences an adrenaline rush though! Those two experiences are enough for me. More cautious in my "older" age!

There has been quite a controversy here ... it seems a little village called Elmwood Place installed some automated speed cameras on a couple streets, usually conveniently in a 25-mph zone right inside the corporation limits and adjacent to a 35-mph zone. No cop cars, no warning other than a sign on the device (by the time you see the sign it's too late).

*Click* you just got your picture taken. *Ding* you were speeding. A week or two later here comes a little notice in the mail: the car you own was clocked going too fast. That's $105, please. It's a civil penalty, not a moving violation, so you don't get dinged on yor driving record. If you don't pay up (or request a hearing) by the deadline the cost goes up and you could be sent to a collection agency. So far they've sent out a few thousand of those notices. So many people have requested a hearing that the village had to hire a magistrate.

They're making (or trying to make) a fast buck off of unsuspecting drivers, and so is the company that makes the devices (they get a portion of the "profit" from each citation). The manufacturer is apparently marketing their devices to other places as well.

The notice comes with a photo of the vehicle and license plate, and is addressed to the vehicle owner.

People are starting to avoid driving in the village, and that in turn is hurting small businesses there. I think we're seeing the Law of Unintended Consequences here!
