Installed an used SSD from another Computer and it booted up

Thought I would share this with all you good folks (hopefully good).

The other day I went and purchased a new SanDisk 240 gig SSD to install in my desktop for use with the new Win 8 OS. Having a Sandisk 240 gig already in the machine I had decided to put that one in my HP dv7 laptop.

To make a long story short I removed the old HDD from the laptop and installed the 6 month old Sandisk (had yet to remove the OS from the desktop) into the laptop. Closed everything up and fired it up; now I trully was surprised when the laptop booted into Win 7 from the newly installed (older) SSD. What????? Yes it booted right into the OS without even thinking about it, and as soon as the system booted up it went and found all the drivers it need automatically. . .

    Go Figure...

BTW I have attempted several times over the years to do this; and this is a first for me.

windows seven is awesome. i had the same idea that when win 8 was released i would fire my 7 on 128 Gb SSD into my vista laden laptop HP6735s. i intended to use a clean install of windows 7, but i guess HP laptops being what they are, i found i was unable to do this. so i wasn't exactly sure what i had on the ssd, because i change components in my pc a tad more often than i should. i was hoping it would be a mirror of the lappy hard drive and so i installed it and booted up and lo and behold i realised it was win 7, and like you said Lee., windows just went into overdrive and insatalled all the drivers i needed. very fast now with the ssd as oppeosed to very very slow

I'm sorry M'Lady, I'm not sure what you mean? Lee installed a SSD he already had, with the operating system on it, in another PC and it worked right away in the new PC. What is it you'd like to do? A Guy

Well, Lee no doubt installed a SSD, then used his windows installation disc to install windows on it. Or, he saved an image of his hard drive install, and restored that to his new SSD. A SSD is a drive, and you install the OS to it like you would a hard drive. It is just a different type of drive.

Wolfgang has a good tute at 7F that may be what you seek:

I used the Paragon Migrate to SSD program myself, but some prefer to do a clean install. Hope that helps?

A Guy that's what I was wanting.. tell me more about the program you use..
I would prefer to NOT have the hassle of a complete NEW install of everything.. if that's possible..

I think sometimes I may confuse by the way I'm asking for something I need.
Yes your info . has been very helpful. Thanks so very much.
