The program is mentioned in Wolfgang's tutorial

Paragon Migrate OS to SSD - System migration to Solid State Drives (SSD) - Overview

It's $20, but basically does all the work for you. Assuming your current install is not larger then the new SSD, it will transfer everything as is from your hard drive to the SSD. You then remove the hard drive (or wipe it and use it as a data drive) and you are ready to go. A Guy

    Windows 8 - 64 bit

A Guy that's exactly what I needed. I'll try this when I have plenty of free time.. so I won't be rushed.
I hope I've not been too much trouble. It's great to have such a helpful friend.
    Thank you so very much.

This answers a question I had about switching hard drives between computers with win 7-8. XP uses a hardware extraction layer (HAL) to interface between the hardware and the op system. There are multiple different HALs in XP, If the HAL isn't right for the processor, it won't work. If the HAL is right, but the wrong drivers are installed on the op system, it may not work, and will require manual replacement for the drivers in many cases. When I first installed windows 7 on a system, I was amazed to see how well it managed drivers, having all the most popular drivers installed. When I first installed windows 8, it immediately told me that I had hardware it would not support, and would not install without changing the hardware. Obviously 7 and 8 apparently handle different style processors and different hardware with aplomb (if there are things not handled, someone more knowledgeable than I should speak up)

Thanks davebroyles for good explanation of all my HAL errors in XP. Years late but at least now I've read an easy to understand simple explanation of what they are.

    pcRat,

Glad I was able to help. The really great thing is that Win 7 & 8 seemed to have either eliminated the HAL or made it much more versatile so we don't have to screw with it.
