BSOD with code VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE

Hello!

I have submitted this BSOD post last week http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-crashes-debugging/8560-bsod-code-dpc_watchdog_violation.html, and since then my laptop had lots of BSOD, but of another species: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (nvlddmkm.sys).

I have tried to upgrade my NVidia Card driver (or even downgrade, as some users did with sucess), but to no avail.

I have Windows 8 Release Preview and can only work in safe mode by now. If I login in normal mode, I would either have my pc freeze or end in a BSOD crash, almost every time.

The logs can be found attached to the post.

Can anyone guide me on this one?
Thanks in advance,

Ricardo.

Ps: my HP Pavillion dv9000 also suffers from overheating, as many HP do, which can contribute in some part... I'll try to buy a cooler tonight!

Hi ricaforrica. Welcome to EF. :) Sorry that no one has posted a reply. Thanks for asking again.

Please post your specs. And please add to your specs in your profile, so as people can see your rig.

Being a lappy, it's probably video driver.

Another biggie => Do you use Chrome?

I'll check out the logs.

What do you have plugged into USB ports? You keep getting a Fault bucket type 5 because of a driver.

Do you have any yellow "!" in device manager?

Action Center on desktop taskbar -> Open -> Any issues?

Im my USB Ports I only normally have the mouse (and now the cooler a colleague loaned to me)!

In Action Center, only the message "Turn on Windows Security Center service", but it happens because I am in safe mode.

And in the device manager, the only yellow "!" is on "Generic non-PNP monitor", which has the status "Status is not available for this device when Windows is running in Safe Mode."

Thanks again for your support!

Hello HippsieGypsie!

I uninstalled Google Chrome Wednesday morning and for a day I thought it was the solution: my pc had no problem until Thursday morning, but then I started having again the black screens and pc freezes and one BSOD.. so I'm back in safe mode :(

Right before it crashed again this Thursday morning, I noticed that the pc had suddenly gone really hot (even with the cooler on).
Perhaps it would be better to disassemble the machine and clean the dust that must have pilled in for the last 4 years since I bought it!

I moved from Vista to Windows 8 Release Preview... perhaps I should have tried Windows 7 first :p

My new logs are attached to this post.

Thanks again for the support!
Best regards,

Ricardo.

Ok, ricaforrica. If somethings overheating that isn't cool. (No pun intended) Are you ok to take it apart by yourself?

I make it a habit to blow out my PC every 6 months. Of course PCs are easier.

Hi again!

I don't have much experience in messing with hardware
But perhaps I can get help from a more experienced cousin and follow some of the guides I found online, like this one.

Anything else with the software that you can think of?
Best regards,

Ricardo.

Hi ricaforrica. Sorry, but I haven't had the time to look at your log files as of yet.

In the mean time, I think we should get the heat problem worked out first before you fry your unit. That would be quite a shame and costly. The guide you found looks good. It would be better to have help, like your cousin as you stated, if you feel you can't accomplish that alone. Two heads are better than one as they say. Twice the memory.

Thanks for keeping us posted. Good luck.

Hello HippsieGypsie!

Problem (aparently) solved! :)

Yesterday night my cousin helped me with the "surgery" (following the guide I posted earlier) and we found that the fan vent was full of dust, preventing the exaust. The nvidia chip was really close to the vent so I guess that's why it was the first thing failing with the heat.

The computer isn't overheating anymore and no more freezes for the last 24 hours!

Thanks for your help in the process!
Best regards,

Ricardo.

That's great ricaforrica! Good going :)

I believe all things work for the good even if at the time incidences seem bad. It seems that if you didn't load 8, you might not have known the problem, therefore the machine might have burned up.

You're quite welcome :) That's what this forum is all about. Helping each other.

Hello HippsieGypsie and other forumers!

Well... it was only "aparently" not for good :(
A couple of hours after my post I got another freeze or BSOD!

I was out for the weekend and since monday I've been working in safe mode, as I had many tasks to finish and couldn't afford to loose any time. Today before leaving work I shut down the laptop and at night when I started working I had many freezes and a couple of BSODs (video_tdr_failure and dpc_watchdog_violation).

So I'm posting another zip with my logs and perhaps in the weekend I will try to use msconfing to do some aditional checks.
I could always try to install Windows 7!

Thanks again!
Best regards,

Ricardo.
