BSOD & no recovery options

Yesterday I installed Windows 8 Pro. All went fine until I decided to try whether Symantec EP 12 would install and work.

It doesn't, it results in a BSOD (SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION in SysPlant.sys). OK fine, just boot into safe mode and deinstall SEP or disable the service, right? Wrong.

Apparently MS changed how to enter safe mode. So I've looked around and found some sites like: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way) - How-To Geek and http://pureinfotech.com/2012/05/24/access-windows-8-boot-options-menu-all-you-need-to-know/

However, how many times I try, I can't get SHIFT+F8 to do anything. My problem now is that WinRE booted from my primary harddisk OR the installation media do not allow me to load any mass storage drivers (as far as I can tell).

Since my OCZ IBIS (integrated SiI RAID) is not detected by default, WinRE therefore does not provide me with any access to the drive, nor is the option 'Windows Startup Settings' shown under 'Troubleshooting'. Since the drive is inaccessible I can't use bcdedit to set safe mode, manually delete the offending SysPlant.sys or use Automatic Repair/System Restore.

So to me it's looking like MS made it so that you can easily enable safe mode when you don't need it (if you can boot Win8 you can use msconfig/bcdedit) and apparently made safe mode completely inaccessible if you do need it (since Win8 doesn't boot) AND happen to need mass storage drivers.

Now it looks to me that I will need to perform a complete reinstall for a problem that would be fixed in 5 minutes for Windows 7. This seems completely retarded to me, please tell me that I'm missing something...

Well, eventually I used a Windows 7 install disk to start recovery mode. Windows 7 recovery mode *does* ask for a mass storage driver, so I could delete the offending driver in a command prompt.

Having to use an earlier version doesn't seem the way to go though...
