BSOD Upon Boot After Using Steam for Undertale on Win 8.1

Ah, I'm still used to my old laptop with Vista; don't know if it was one of the many bugs it suffered or a feature, but it allowed me full access in safe mode with networking. Glad to hear it's just how things work in Windows 8 and not a further sign of potentially faulty hardware in this case!

Just wanted to keep you updated that I've decided to order flash drives and eat the cost of it as necessary so I can back up the data I care about and make a recovery drive. Then I'll proceed with attempting the driver update and let you know how it goes. Hopefully, ideally, that'll be the end of this problem... But with my luck in technology, it probably won't.

Hi again. I'm in the process of backing up as many files as I can - should be able to put all my personal documents and some game saves / small programs into the larger flash drive I bought. After that, I have a cheap, little USB 2.0 drive which I'm guessing I'll make into a Windows recovery drive. I'm just in over my head with the idea of system images etc and too stressed from the predicament to properly learn. Not the best of situations, but I do have system restore points available so hopefully that'll cover my rear in the event of catastrophic driver update fail.

But seeing how this is the way I was greeted this afternoon:

    Attachment 67915

... Hopefully I can be forgiven for being overwhelmed.

Anyway, my reason for this post is to ask how I'm supposed to go about a driver update. I'm not confident in this, and googling led to conflicting advice - such as whether to uninstall first. Right now, I have the updated driver installer from HP sitting on my desktop. Other than knowing it seems to be an actual installer, I'm totally lost.

Simply execute the installer and follow the onscreen instructions, it doesn't really matter much whether you install and reboot or first remove and then install

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, it seems HP doesn't automate the process. It says on the opening screen to remove the previous driver first. (Maybe there's a known issue with them and my computer has discovered it first hand.) Is that done through device manager's "uninstall" option? And will a System Restore point bring them back if I end up unable to use the new ones?

I need sleep anyway before taking the plunge on this, here's hoping Hawke starts up next time.

Appreciate the prompt response. Do I need to reboot after the uninstall? (Sorry for so many questions I just don't want to mess up.)

Rebooting after uninstalling causes the same driver to be reinstalled again if you don't install a new driver, to prevent that you install the new driver first and then reboot

Thanks again for all your help! The driver update went off without a hitch, and after one reboot and two shut down / start up attempts, it appears my BSOD issue has gone. However, I'm going to wait until I can try extensive use of Steam (playing a game or two) before marking it as solved, just to make sure the issue doesn't once again rear its ugly head after using the program. Hopefully this'll be the last you have to hear from me, and all will go well!

Spent a few hours playing Undertale this afternoon, and even booted up Steam in online mode for a bit afterward to be extra certain. Smooth shutdown and startup afterward, without a hitch. Knock on wood, but it seems to be fixed now! Thanks again; marking as solved.
