Solved Random Crashes (No BSOD) - Event 41, Kernel-Power

Over the past year my computer has crashed—completely shuts down, no BSOD—randomly. It might happen once a month or three times in the same day. Today, I decided to try and solve the problem.

Based on my research, I suspect the RAM or PSU.

Initially, I noticed that my DRAM settings were set to auto, which made the timings 11-11-11-28-2T and the voltage 1.5V, instead of their recommended 9-9-9-24-2T timings and 1.5V voltage. I manually fixed this in the BIOS, but it doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.

I ran memtest86 for one pass with no errors (will run more passes tonight to be sure).

I have messed around with Prime95 some and have made my system crash a couple times, but it only crashes when using the Blend test. Hopefully this helps find the culprit. However, the crashing is still random. It might crash in the first minute, or it might take 10 minutes. I just ran it for 20 minutes and could not get it to crash.

System Info:
CPU: i7-4790K @ 4.4GHz
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model F3-12800CL9Q-16GBRL (one stick has been replaced with G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model F3-12800CL9S-4GBRL)
MB: ASUS Maximus VII Gene
PSU: EVGA 80+ Bronze 600W
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 100ME 4GB GDDR5

Any help is much appreciated. :)

Without dumpfiles is difficult to analyse.

But you need to run at least 8 passes to test your ram.
Memory Test.
Please start withdiagnosing the system RAM first. You can use the free tool "Memtest86+"to stress test the RAM.

How to run "Memtest" -
RAM - Test withMemtest86+ - Windows 7 Help Forums

Make sure you are using the latest version 5.01 -
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
You can stop the test even if a single error is found during the test.Otherwise continue the test for 7-10 passes and post a screenshot with nextreply. 7 passes is the recommended bare minimum but more passes will givebetter result.

(one stick has been replaced with G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model F3-12800CL9S-4GBRL)
This particular module is not named in the QVL list.
Using 2 different (oncompatible) memory modules can destabilize the system.

The latest bios is 3003 with improve system stability, you have version 2702

Do you have installed all the latest drivers for windows 8.1 from https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_GENE/HelpDesk_Download/
See also for the QVL memory module list
.
Your C:\ disc has only 7.4 gb free, windows needs at least 10% free space to run the system proper. Make some more free space.

In your WER (windows error reporting)
This error with a device has been mentioned a few times.

Without dumpfiles is difficult to analyse.

As the OP says, no BSOD has occured.

Kernel power error id 41 simply means a problem with the power, it happens with every system crash (shutdown, bluescreen, freeze) and isn't very useful.
Usually it is being caused by

Sometimes it is also caused by

  • (corrupted) tasks in the task scheduler that says to shutdown/restart the system for some unknown reason,
  • power issue in a component (too much or less power),
  • overheating/overheated hardware where in the BIOS is defined to shutdown/restart the system after a certain temperature has been reached.

Thanks for the info axe0. I will test the PSU and report back as soon as possible.

Edit: Actually, I will not have a multi-meter until at least Sunday night. I will test the PSU as soon as possible though and report back.

@ axo and @ leespiker
A kernel 41 is not only Power related but there could be more reasons.
See this article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2028504

That is why i said that without a dumpfile it is difficult to analyse this problem, i am aware that there were no dumpfiles..

A kernel event ID 41 means a power problem, but it doesn't say anything else what makes it in most cases useless.

This is no bluescreen, only with bluescreens dumps are saved.

@lifetec

I have done the following as you suggested:

  • Updated my bios to the latest version (3003).
  • Installed all missing drivers from my motherboard's driver page.
  • Freed up my SSD windows (C) drive. It now has ~13.5% free space.
  • Installed Razer Tarantula Keyboard driver. I also installed my Razer Lachesis Mouse driver.

I am about to run Memtest86+ v5.01 while I sleep. I will report back with the results when I wake up. Thanks again. :)

@lifetec

I am almost finished with my sixth successful pass of Memtest86+ v5.01. Here is a screenshot of its current progress. It actually just finished its sixth successful pass at about 11 hours and 25 minutes. Do I need to run 8 passes, or is it alright if I stop after 7 successful passes?

Thanks in advance. :)

Edit: It has finished the seventh successful pass as seen here. I will just wait for eight successful passes as suggested before stopping it.

Edit1: It has finished the eighth successful pass as seen here. I have stopped it now and am about to do some Prime95 tests again. My updated info: View attachment 67073 Please let me know if there is anything else I should fix.

Edit2: I ran the Prime95 Blend Test for 70 minutes without any crashes. Do you think I need to run the other two tests?

Then your RAM is good and i suspect no problematic PSU either.

I only found 1 WER on 17 jan and that was a Windowsupdatefaillure
Use Windows updatefaillure Fix it
Fix it for me
Use our Windows Update Automated Troubleshooter
Thistroubleshooter will detect and solve Windows update issues automatically.

It looks that you were trying to get a Xbox controller working on your system. There is mention of this device not found and a WER with a universal USB.exe installer on 16 jan.

Else it looks good to me
Use your system and report the development.

Until proven that it is not problematic the PSU can't be ignored with this type of crashes.

I would suggest to try my suggestions in my previous post.

So, I am still having the same problem. :(

I tested the power supply connections and every wire had lower voltage than the charts except the blue cable which had higher. Some examples: Orange cables were reading 3.00 instead of 3.41. Yellow cables were reading 11.4 instead of 12.35. Purple cable was 4.74 instead of 5.07. Grey cable was 4.26 instead of 5.09. Red cables were 4.6 instead of 5.05.

I used HWMonitor to monitor the 3.3V, 5V, and 12V voltages when running Prime95. They were at 3.376V/3.392V, 5.120V, and 12.480V respectively.

Here is my current info: View attachment 67122

Edit: To add more details about the current situation. The shutdowns have been happening more frequently the last two days for some reason. About five or six times in the last 48 hours I believe. Also, sometimes the computer will restart on its own, sometimes it will not. It's about a 50% chance that it will restart on its own, based on the last six shutdowns.

The fastest way to rule out if the PSU is the culprit is to use a other PSU temporally.
Do you have a spare one or could you borrow one from a friend.

In the new WER i found this

I do not have a spare PSU at the moment.

My headphones were connected when the shutdowns occurred. The driver should be up to date since I'm using Razer Synapse, and there are no new updates. My other Razer devices (Razer Tarantula and Razer Lachesis) have the most up to date drivers, but they are quite old in general. Only Windows 7 drivers were available, so I installed those on my Windows 8.1. Hopefully that's not what's causing the issue.

As far as the windows update failure goes, I assume it's when I downloaded Windows 10, but didn't install it, so it failed. That should be fine, right?

Edit: I just installed another Windows update or two. Here is my new info: View attachment 67123
