Solved Various BSODs at seemingly random times 1-2 weeks apart

As the title says, my laptop has been getting various BSOD errors for the past couple months at seemingly random times. Errors include IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, and ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY, but there may have been others. I tried updating drivers, but it didn't seem to fix the problem (unless there were some I missed). The only common things I can think of are my media player being open (a couple of them happened shortly after I resumed playback), but that hasn't been an issue before and the same setup works fine on other PCs so I'm not sure what's causing it.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Hi suteact,

Welcome to the 10forums.

Please uninstall everything of Nvidia using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from your manufacturer. Be sure the clean install box is checked and only install the Graphics driver and the PhysX driver.

Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

  1. Uninstall Daemon Tools
  2. Download the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
    • Double click the executable to open it
    • Click on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

Alright, I did what you posted. If there isn't anything else that needs to be done for now, then I'll post again / mark it as solved in 6-8 weeks or when the next BSOD happens; whichever happens first. Thanks for the assistance!

Actually (sorry for the double post), but do you have any recommended alternatives to Daemon Tools for mounting MDF and ISO files that won't cause problems?

PowerISO, I have never seen it causing problems

Had another BSOD. It was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL again this time if I recall correctly. It happened a few seconds after I resumed playback on a video after it had been paused for a while (noticed the same has happened for a few of the previous BSODs).

I've run the same playback setup (pre-configured MPC-BC, MadVR, xy-vsfilter, and LAV-Filters) on three other PCs (and this laptop up until a few months ago) without issues for almost two years, so I'm not sure what the relation could be.

Are you switching between your GPU's?
If you are, make sure to not switch between GPU's.

If it is, it's not intentional. Set "Preferred graphics processor" under "Global Settings" in "Manage 3D Settings" to the "High-performance NVIDIA processor" instead of "Auto-select"? Or is there something else I need to set?

Alright, I'll try that and see if it fixes anything. Thanks.

Just popping in to mark this as solved. It seems the act of it switching between GPUs was what was causing the BSODs. Thanks a lot.
