Various BSODs under heavy load

Hey there!

For the last couple of months I'm experiencing various BSODs while gaming (Dota 2 and Fallout 4 are the last games I've played). During normal office activities like browsing, text processing or even programming everything runs without problems.

The BSODs I've gotten so far are:
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (WdFilter.sys or nvlddmkm.sys)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (ntoskrnl.exe)
and one without a bug check string.

This is what I've done so far:

1. Thinking it could be related to Windows 10, I've downgraded to Windows 8.1. So my current system is a fresh Windows with Intel Chipset drivers and latest Nvidia drivers installed. The BSODs are still showing up.

2. Multiple GPU and temperature tests with FurMark. The tests ran between 30 minutes and multiple hours before a BSOD showed up. CPU temperatures were always between 45 and 60°C. GPU temperature maxed out at about 73°C.

3. Older Nvidia driver. As the BSODs began to show up 2-3 months ago, I thought it could be related to the driver so I've installed an Nvidia driver from January 2015 but it did not help.

4. Driver Verifier. Without driver verifier enabled, I've gotten various bug checks. With driver verifier enabled, I seem to always get SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION with nvlddmkm.sys and the BSODs start to show up a lot earlier when running FurMark (after about 5 and 15 minutes).

5. Smart status of the SSD looks good. Chkdsk and sfc /scannow reported no errors.

6. I've let memtest run over night. It did 6 passes and reported no errors.

My first thought was that it must be a hardware issue but as the BSODs show up much earlier when driver verifier is enabled, I really think it must be some driver issue.

There are 6 minidumps in the attached zip file. 111115-17531-01.dmp, 111115-15671-01.dmp and 111515-16531-01.dmp are from BSODs that happened during normal gaming without driver verifier enabled. The other three all happened during FurMark with driver verifier enabled.

I really hope you guys can give me a hint here as I'm starting to run out of ideas.

Hi rudzn,

How have you removed and installed the Nvidia drivers?

Hi axe0,

I removed the latest nvidia drivers through the control panel and installed the ones from january with the fresh install option enabled.

Nevertheless, I have tested the whole day and was able to pinpoint my problems to one of the memory modules. As long as this module was plugged in, I did get BSODs while running FurMark and Prime95 simultaneously. With it removed, I'm able to run them without any problems.

I'm just wondering why memtest did report 0 errors after more then 10 hours of testing...

Please uninstall everything of Nvidia using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from Nvidia. Be sure the clean install box is checked and only install the Graphics driver and the PhysX driver.

How many passes are done after 10h+?
