Windows 8 Web Browsing Freeze - WORKAROUND / FIX!

If you've been using the Windows 8 Release Preview on an Intel motherboard setup, and have been experiencing problems with your whole system freezing, then you're probably as insane and annoyed as I am with the issue.
To those that haven't experienced it, here's what basically happens: We'll be browsing around (in any browser!), and all of a sudden, the display will stop rendering, yet the mouse keeps moving. We're able to click on some things, and enter the metro start screen, but no apps will open and only some of the clicks will render changes on the screen. From this point, that's it, we have to hard reboot. I am actually able to get a system beep (and mouse freeze) by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del and clicking around for a few seconds.
No, there is no BSOD, there is no "Your computer encounted a problem it couldn't handle" or any other sign of error. It just freezes, and it's horrible!
Anyway, good news for those that are experiencing it......
The Fix!

Some warnings first:
1; This is NOT a permanent fix. This needs to be solved my MS / Intel.
2; Depending on how you use your computer, you may notice degraded performance with this fix, but I am happy to trade that for a system that doesn't freeze.
3; Whilst I will do my best to help anyone with issues for this fix, I am not responsible for any damage you may cause to your system etc. etc.
If you already run a virtualisation environment such as VMWare or VirtualBox (with 64-bit VMs only), they will no longer work. The reason is that the Hypervisor doesn't expose the VT-x extension to it's virtual machines (including your new root), and so other virtualisation products can't be ran with full effectiveness. The obvious workaround to this problem is to convert your VMWare/VirtualBox VMs to Hyper-V, and import them using the Hyper-V Manager.
Here's the fix: Enable Hyper-V. By enabling Hyper-V on your machine, your root OS (which you use) will now run on top of a Hypervisor, which means it's essentially virtualised. It's not in the same sense as a virtual machine, as your OS will still have direct hardware access to essentials such as graphics cards for gaming etc.
Full steps:

  1. Open Desktop
  2. Win + C (Charms bar) (or Win+I for Settings directly)
  3. Settings
  4. Control Panel
  5. Programs & Features
  6. Turn Windows Features on or off
  7. Tick "Hyper-V" (and sub-components, although not required if you won't create virtual machines)
  8. Reboot (it will reboot twice to reconfigure your system completely)
That's it, now have fun browsing!
Please report your success / failure on this post, so I can start spreading it even more. I know a few people that have said it's solved their issues so no negative feedback now, and I'm 24 hours in to testing it.
Small update based on the few people who don't get this working: You need virtualisation extensions (VT-x) enabled in your BIOS/UEFI config, so go enable those first. You can confirm that the Hypervisor is running after reboot by looking in System Event Viewer and finding the 'Hypervisor successfully started.' log entry. If you see an error when starting and wonder why the fix might not be working, well that's why :)
Update 19th June 2012 - Still running strong 4 days in, I've also had several confirmations of this working for others also, keep the confirmations coming so we can spread it even further. Feel free to retweet my post on Twitter also to spread it around. I've made a few minor updates to the article also.

This has absolutely worked for me. Thank you so much, I was pulling my hair out trying to fix this and eventually gave up. I installed Windows 8 one last time to give this a try and its been rock solid and I've noticed no performance hit at all even while gaming.

I saw the Hyper-V option there. I don't get what you mean. It's unchecked. Do you want me to activate it? There is another option that is blanked out. It's called "Hyper-V Platform". I can't check it or do anything with it.

Yes I've been getting the same strange freezes for no reason. Not to mention it's not even letting me use IE or any other of those default apps that I probably will never use anyway.

I didn't see any "VT-x" in there. In the Overclocking section in by BIOS, there is a section for CPU features. It has options for:
-Intel Virtualization Tech
-VT-D Tech

Both of them are disabled. Should I enable those?

Interesting...
Can this freeze also happen on Win7 x64? Because I had something like this and also using VirtualBox / VMWare.

It didn't happen on Win8 because there was no VM program installed yet.

VT-x was used by VBox and VMware Player but fir Hyper-V it's REQUIRED in order to turn the feature on.

Who is to blame here: I mean it's something to do with VT-x on Intel platforms but why stop using VMware or VirtualBox?

EDIT: yes there is no Hyper-V in Win7 and the same fix won't work.
If I understand correctly the hang occurs because of VT-x (bugs?) being enabled.

It's not in the same sense as a virtual machine, as your OS will still have direct hardware access to essentials such as graphics cards for gaming etc

Didn't knew this yet. It's behaving like bare-metal hypervisor.
And this will disable VT-x for VBox / VMWare which run on top (they are hosted hypervisors).

VT-D Tech
If you have this one enabled you could even let a VM use your hosts graphic card on a bare metal hypervisor.
If you have SLI, you could give a second graphics card to a VM like in Parallells Workstation Extreme.

If i got it correctly, the hang happens because of VT-x. By letting Hyper-V use it, it will disable it for it's underlying operating systems / programs (no hang anymore).

It didn't happened in Win7 in quite some time. VT-x is always on here.
If it will happen again:
To try to fix this hang on Win7:
disable VT-x and reboot, but maybe doesn't work. (If VT-x is really to blame, the fix should work on all operating systems including Win8)
There should be a patch from Intel if this is that important.
But the hang happened only on Windows (Win7 & Win8 are affected on my pc)

Thanks DM1 for the post.

I recently installed Win8 RP on to a brand new OCZ 128Gb Vertex 4 SSD (using AHCI enabled in the BIOS), before I had it installed on a HDD (only IDE was enabled in the BIOS). When running Win8 RP on the HDD I had no freezing issues at all. On the SSD it was a different story, nothing but freezing. I've just ticked the Hyper-V box to see if this solves the issue. Thanks for the tip.

2 huge issues with SSD's are firmware updates - and motherboard storage controller updates.
Make sure both are the latest available.

The main OS is on the SSD. It's not partitioned and there is nothing else on it. I have 2 internal HDD drives and 2 external HDD's. All are linked up to the SATA ports. I am not running a RAID setup and the SSD is attached to the first SATA port. In the BIOS, AHCI is set to 'compatibility' instead of 'enhanced'. All SATA ports are set to AHCI in the BIOS. There would be no point in running my system without the HDD's attached, they are required for data storage.

Just FYI - there were some issues with memory settings and the Asus P5 series of boards a while back.
Haven't seen any recently tho'.

But, here's my canned speech for it (just in case):
FWIW - I've seen a lot of issues with the Asus P5 series of boards. I usually recommend this:
- DO NOT use the AUTO setting for memory. Go to the RAM manufacturer's website and get the recommended settings for the RAM. Then set those settings manually in the BIOS
- one person with a 2009 BIOS has experienced success by updating the BIOS. This is dangerous and one simple mistake can easily damage your motherboard so it won't work. Be VERY, VERY CAREFUL!!!
- one person reports bad caps ( Badcaps.net - How To Identify ) in this post: [SOLVED] Bad overclock and now can't load windows 7 - Tech Support Forum

As of late June 2012 - I haven't seen many issues with these boards over the last several months.

That's a lot of drives there. Hope your power supply has enough power.
Not sure you've got IDE drives but my guess is yes.
Yes AHCI should be set to IDE compatible but only if you have IDE drives (something connected in the Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller: hdd drives or DVD/CD drives). If all drives are connected to SATA, then set it to enhanced.

Here I have a screenshot from Device Manager:
View attachment 7036
It's an older motherboard.
The SATA is a DVD drive only.
The IDE is used with master and slave. And i have also set so compatible in the BIOS.

The IDE is visible only if it's used like in this case.
I don't have an SSD to test but if the AHCI is badly set I get a bluescreen.

Well, I've been monitoring my system. The freezing occurs only when Real Player v.15.0.4.53 is in use. As far as I can see, no other programme is causing freezing. Mouse moves fine yet nothing can be opened or shut down when freezing occurs. Logging out and then back in is the only way to get Win8 back up and running.

I have my doubts as to whether the current version of Real Player is compatible with Windows 8. The programme sometimes reverts to a non Aero skin for no apparent reason at times and functionality also stops working when that occurs. I'll keep monitoring things, Real Player seems to be causing the problem at this point though.

As for power, it's covered with this Professional Series

RAM seems fine on the board. I've never had any problems with it. The rest of the system seems to be running fine.
