Lenovo Y510p - Freezing/Chrashing

Hello 8-forums.

I'm posting on behalf of my little brother since he isn't the sharpest when it comes to computers. Today his computer started freezing and crashing out of nowhere at completely random times. I couldn't pinpoint an activity he was doing which might have caused it.

On top of that a pop-up kept coming up on his screen about his screen driver having crashed and has been restored. I happen to have the same laptop and I've had this problem for a week or 2 too, but nothing happens when it shows up on my screen (unlike his, where it crashes the computer). His screen now also has blue matrix-like lines all over his screen as a result of todays crashes.

I asked him to send the Zip-file from the DM log collector tool. He only had a BSoD once and he didn't notice the error code. The rest were freezes (forced to restart) and crashes (no BSoD screen).

Hope you can help find a solution to my brothers problem.
Regards Jens and Walther

Hi Snejxjens,

Welcome to the 8forums.

Please remove some files to increase the free space to at least 10-15%.
Every partition needs at least 10-15% free space so Windows can do its thing in the background.

Hello again!

So I just talked to my brother and he says that he has done everything you asked, but the problem is still there. Got any other ideas on how to fix it? :)

The screen still has blue matrix lines and crashes at random points.

HI Snejxjens,

What definition of crashes are we talking about?
  • BSOD crashes
  • System Freeze crashes
  • Shutdown / restart crashes
I am asking this as some are thinking that these crashes are the same and because of that are creating a thread in the BSOD section.

If it is BSOD crashes, please let your brother run the DM Log Collector tool again and upload the zip file.

Hi axe0.

I talked with my brother about wheter or not it was actually BSoD or not. To my understanding it's mostly the computer either freezing or crashing (screen goes black and not works and is forced to restart by removing the battery). He says it has only had 1 occurence of something that sounds like a BSoD (blue screen and "collecting log" message). Might not be a BSoD problem after all, but something entirely different.

I've attached the log collector zip he send me.

Please remove Spybot, use Revo Uninstaller Free to remove it
Code:
Start Menu\Programs\Spybot - Search & Destroy	Public:Start Menu\Programs\Spybot - Search & Destroy	Public
Please uninstall Google Chrome while troubleshooting, it has caused a lot of issues for many users.

Please check every installed 3rd party program for updates.
Please check Windows Updates for updates and install every update available if there are any.

Please try following:
  • Open an admin command prompt
  • Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
  • When it finished reboot your system
  • Open again an admin command prompt
  • Enter sfc/scannow again
If sfc/scannow does NOT say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation", please upload the cbs.log file located at {windows partition}\Windows\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.
