BSOD random - Wdf01000.sys, Surface 3

Hi all

I have a Microsoft surface 3 (not the pro) which recently had a blue screen after running a simple LabVIEW vi for about 60 hours (very low load). When looking for the minidump, I noticed and remembered the same thing happened little over a month ago (I'm pretty sure it happened at a very random moment that time). Windbg states Wdf01000.sys as the cause in both files.

After looking around on the net I found someone suggesting to run driver verifier, which I did. This caused the tablet to crash multiple times with really nothing running. These minidumps are in the attached file as well, they have different causes though, blaming either volmgr or pci.sys.

So to sum it up: the two oldest minidumps are real random BSOD's, the other ones happened while running driver verifier.

I know there are countless threads about BSOD's with Wdf01000.sys as the subject, but they all ended up having such different causes, which I don't know how they were determined, that I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

Thanks,
Vincent

This surface just runs the regular version of Windows 8.1. There's really no difference with a regular laptop, except for the fact that it doesn't have a keyboard :)

Please reset driver verifier
  • Open an admin command prompt
  • Enter "verifier/reset" (without quotes) and press enter

There are 2 - 3 causes

The 1st is the Intel Graphics driver, not sure from where you can possibly update this driver.
Code:
2: kd> lmvm igdkmd64lp
start end module name
fffff800`7c296000 fffff800`7c6ff000 igdkmd64lp T (no symbols)
    Loaded symbol image file: igdkmd64lp.sys
    Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\igdkmd64lp.sys
    Image name: [U]igdkmd64lp.sys[/U]
    Timestamp: [COLOR=#ff0000][U]Thu Mar 19 12:40:27 2015[/U][/COLOR] (550AB5AB)

    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4

The other 1 - 2 are either the system files or hard drive
Please do the following:

  • Open an admin command prompt
  • Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
  • When it finished reboot your system
  • Open again an admin command prompt
  • Enter sfc/scannow again
If sfc/scannow does NOT say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation", please upload the cbs.log file located at {windows partition}\Windows\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.

Sorry for the late response, the tablet was at the office and I wasn't.

The intel driver is very interesting. The tablet by default doesn't have the functionality to turn the screen of without going into sleep mode. I installed a little registry workaround which I found here . I wonder if that is causing any disturbances.

I ran sfc /scannnow. It found corrupt files and was unable to fix some of them. I hava attached the CBS.log to this post. Thanks again for your help!

Ok done, it says the restore operation completed successfully. Should I try sfc /scannow again after this to see if all problems are gone?

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". So it looks like that part is fixed at least, thanks!
Do you have any other suggestions. Otherwise I'll see if the blue screen returns or not and let you know :)

Sadly, it just blue screened again. It seems to happen only when it's on for a longer amount of time. This time it was running for about 48 hours. I have attached the new minidump, it seems to be the same like the previous one.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize I had to run it again, Here it is. Thanks again for your quick replies.

It is prefered as with changes to the system that could have effect on the crashes and other relevant stuff we cannot find with only dumps.

The file 'SurfacePlatformPowerDriver.sys' has been flagged, it usually is a file from Microsoft.
But then the information from this file should be more.
Please open explorer and go to the following directory "C:\Windows\System32\drivers" and search for the file 'SurfacePlatformPowerDriver.sys'.
If you find this file, please right click (or however you do it with a surface), choose properties and go to the tab details.
Please make a screenshot and post it.
