Yes, I guess that's what it looks like in safe mode? It does indeed say Administrator at the top of the box.

So, I have a question: What about this display driver that Toshiba have, which is an older version than what is coming through Windows Update - what the heck do these OEs do to drivers that make them so special? I ran the Intel Driver Evaluation tool and it told me I have an OE display driver, and I should go to their website and use the driver there. (Which is what I reverted to BTW.) So, what happens if I use the MS W8.1core x64 to do an in-place upgrade (repair) or even a clean install? The only thing I really see here is Toshiba HotKeys, and this stupid graphics driver. What are the consequences of my using the MS disk and not using the Toshiba recovery media?

Almost all OEMs, alter their drivers to work with their machines. So, usually no other driver will work. After about 6-8 months, they do not release any new drivers, which causes people like me, all kinds of grief. But, it is what it is.

I really don't know what Toshiba puts in their recovery media. I would suggest to do an in place repair install using the Toshiba recovery media. If that does not work, and you are ready to do a clean install, I have one thing I would like to try. Completely untested. If you have to go for a clean install, I would use a Microsoft disk and make it rally clean. If there are Toshiba utilities you really need, you can install them.

If you think it is simply a driver problem, we could try to run driver verifier, before any of the above.

    I have removed the following:
    Toshiba app place
    Toshiba book place
    Toshiba eco utility
Toshiba Service Station(orig version + new one I installed 2 days ago)

Did not remove Toshiba Quality Application - think I should?
what is Toshiba Quality Application? - TOSHIBA FORUMS
    and
TOSHIBA Quality Application - Should I Remove It?

    also left on:

    Attachment 65524

Going to reboot and see what happens.

I am not opposed to trying driver verifier. I'm getting real close to a clean install.
This is ridiculous. A problem like this should not require a clean install. It also should not require DAYS of your and my time!

Ridiculous! And why is there a new graphics driver coming through Windows Update, which is not on the Toshiba site? UGH!

From past experience using OEM recovery disks - all you are able to do is return the system to how it was when you bought it.

I think the majority of the Toshiba utilities are not necessary. If I clean install with MS media instead of Toshiba media, and I have the drivers which are not included in the OS backed up, I think it will be fine. I mean, for example, Intel HD 4000 graphics - how unique can that driver possibly be? Especially if an update to it is coming though WU?

I tried uninstalling the Norton Anti-Theft, but it's not recognized, probably because it's never been activated/used. I might try running it, just to install it, and then uninstall it.

Okay, we may try that next.

As far as Toshiba Quality Application, if it is designed to repair corrupted files; it obviously doesn't work. I know what a pain a clean install can be. I have done 3 this week. But, if you get ready for it and plan, it isn't so bad. I don't spend a lot of time with my rigs. If I can't fix a problem pretty quick, I do a clean install. But, I've done so many it's not a big deal to me. Most people feel different. The only big thing is if the problem is a hardware issue. There are a couple of other things we could try, if you want to. Whatever you want to do, I'm ready.

And maybe I'll just upgrade this thing to W10 and then clean install that!

All the clean installs in the world won't resolve a hardware issue. Let's get that out of the way first, ok? What do I need to do then?

I believe you have already done Seatools. I would run memtest86+, and maybe a GPU stress test. I don't think I would run Furmark, it's pretty brutal for a laptop and HD 3000 graphics. I like Ungine Heaven, just watch temps closely. Heaven | UNIGINE: real-time 3D engine . Besides, it's a lot more interesting than Furmark. That's about all I would do on a Laptop. Prime95 would burn it up.

Then we could try Driver Verifier and one more thing. I've never tried it, but this is a good test for my theory. Sysprep will strip all of the drivers out of the system, just like it is a clean install, but you keep the programs and most everything. It generalizes the system in case you want to transfer the OS to a new computer. I have used it to transfer the OS to another computer a few times and it worked pretty well. We could try that if you want to. I've always wanted to try it in a case like this, but I don't know if it will fix the component store. But it should fix any driver problems.

Why not try uploading the DM Log collector again and let me take another look and see if anything has changed.

Just FYI - I clicked on the Norton Anti-Theft, and it's an installer, but NOTHING HAPPENS!!!! So, I can't install it, therefore I can not uninstall it either!

I've already done Seatools and memtest86+. BTW it's Intel HD 4000. I'll check out Unigine Heaven now.

    Done (see above post).

Edit: I'll have to try Unigine out later, as I have to leave soon...
