Thanks. But I'm still getting 100% disk usage for the first three minutes on boot - regular and clean boot.

Let's see if I still have problems when I close the lid.....

Edit: when I close the lid and let it sleep, I've still got problems.
Open the lid, click the mouse button: the lock screen appears.
Click the mouse button again to go to desktop (no password): I get the light blue background screen, no desktop, just sits there, and if I do nothing, it goes back to the lock screen. wonder if it will work after 3 minutes? LOL

Edit#2: Yep, I was right. About 3 minutes later, I was able to move the mouse/touch the screen and the login screen appeared.

Anything else you think I should remove?

There is a ton of Toshiba bloatware. I would get rid of anything not necessary. Wild Tangent games gave me fits on another machine I had. There is a lot of Adobe programs, 2 readers. Norton is a known cause of problems. Driver Magician?

Check the startup programs. Nothing needs to run at startup except the AV, which should be MSE, at least for a trial. Uninstall Norton and then use the Norton Removal Utility https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/...rProfile_en_us .

I know a lot of people use it, but Apple Software causes some people a lot of problems.

BTW, I know you use it, but I use ESET Smart Security, when I installed Unchecky, ESET went crazy. I had to disable the AV just to install it. Then when I turned it back on, ESET immediately quarantined it. I did send it in for a submission so they will check it for a false positive.

I know you said that you removed Google Drive, But Google, Firefox, Apple and Norton and Adobe (if you let it run at startup) seem to cause a lot of background activity.

    Hi,
Just wanted to post the results of the DISM tools:

    Attachment 65481

DISM Component cleanup failed error 14098
DISM Restore Health failed error 0x800f081f
    Attachment 65482
Haven't had a chance to research these yet.
Have a couple things that need to get done right away, then I will address these errors and the software.
    Thanks!

Edit: p.s. there is no install.wim on this ISO? only install.esd & install.exe. Am I doing something wrong? I guess I can use the ESD2ISO tool to get that?

    Attachment 65484

    uh...no, I guess not....

Simrick try this. I don't know if it works in 8, but it works in 10. Mount the ISO file or plug in the USB flash drive with the installation files on them. Windows will give it a drive Letter. Look in the Sources folder for an install.wim or install.esd. If, for example you have an .esd file and the drive letter was E, you would run this command,

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:E:\Sources\Install.esd:1 /limitaccess

If you have an install.wim and the drive letter is E, run this command

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:E:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Whichever you have, just adjust the path to the install.xxx

Well, I guess I'm a bonehead, essenbe. I was trying to point it at the DVD I had burned from the ISO, and not to the mounted the ISO itself.

Edit: I have a theory: Almost every time I shut down, I get the warning message that an app is preventing it from shutting down, and it's the generic icon, and no name. One time, I clicked cancel, went into Task Manager and ended the Apple Bonjour process. It then shutdown without a problem. I will remove that program as soon as the DISM tool has completed.

Bonjour is part of the Apple utilities you have installed. I think if you uninstall it, none of the Apple programs will work. It has caused me problems a couple of times. I even ended up doing a clean install because of it and the Apple stuff. Some people use it with no problems. Others have fits with it.

You are not a Bonehead. Either way should work as long as you have the path correct and if you use the correct .esd or .wim command.

I don't understand. This is an ISO using the MS media creation tool for W8.1x64.

I think Bonjour is a standalone product and can be installed/uninstalled without affecting the other Apple programs. I will try uninstalling it now.
