Driver State Power Failure - Noticeably when charging

Hello,

I have noticed a post that shares an identical description to my own here, but after reading it, the solution seems to be very much down to the interpretation of a unique dump file, so I am posting hoping that someone may be able to provide a similar level of insight. In short, sorry for the same description, but I cannot think of a better way of wording it.

The problem started today and I have also noticed the problem only occurs when the power cable is plugged in and the laptop is charging.

I have looked around the internet for probable cause to this issue, most point at driver issues, but I am not exactly sure how to pin point the malfunctioning driver. I have tried unistalling Nvidia drivers with DDU in Safe Mode (recommended method for cleanly unistalling drivers) and then reinstalling them. I have also tried rolling back to previous driver versions but the problem persists.

Attached is my DM Log.View attachment 65264

Any help beyond this point would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Melling11,

Welcome to the 8forums.

The causes of the crashes are the Nvidia Video driver and the Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
I guess you already have the IRST driver up to date with the drivers from your manufacturer.
Please try following and see if it works:
  • Press windows logo + r, type services.msc and press enter
  • Search Nvidia Streaming Kernel Service or Nvidia Streamer Service
  • Right click > properties and change the startup type to manually
  • Search the IRST service > right click > properties > change startup type to manually

Hello axe0,

Thank you for your prompt reply, it is greatly appreciated.

I have not updated Intel Rapid Storage drivers, I will try these immediately.

NB: Whilst writing, I downloaded the Intel Driver Utility, no mention of an IRST driver, but ones do exist for HD graphics driver, bluetooth and wireless, I have updated those.

I have looked at the services list and have set the IRST to manual start. Neither of the Nvidia ones exist; I image these are related to the Nvidia Geforce Experience, which I have chosen not to install.

Should I restart my computer?

EDIT: It may also be worth noting that my computer has incurred no BSOD whilst the not on charge.

A quick tip about intel driver utility and laptops.
You should not use this program to update drivers from Intel, this because there are drivers specifically for your laptop available at your manufacturers site.

Please go to your manufacturers site and install all the drivers from there only.

Thanks for the advice, I went back and reinstalled the drivers from Clevo including a WLAN driver, however this was from Realtek; no mention of an Intel Wireless Link Driver on the Clevo site. Would you advise installing the Intel Wireless Link Driver from the Utility previously mentioned considering non are present on the Clevo site?

I tried re-installing the latest Nvidia drivers (355.82). no crashes occurred, but I did notice that my laptop charging light was not on, suggesting that the laptop battery was not charging, despite being plugged in and displaying 50% battery; strange.

I installed older drivers (353.62) to see if it made a difference. These drivers gave me no issues with the power light etc. however I have now noticed my laptop charger gets incredibly hot when gaming, so much so that you cannot hold it with your bare hands without likely burning your fingers. I also noticed the cables velcro strap has been singed badly and I do recall a funny smell the other night...

I believe the problem is partly related to the driver update and some mechanical fault with either my laptop charger, charging port or battery. As the BSOD issues have stopped, I'd imagine this post can be closed.

I intend to claim on the warranty and have the laptops power interface investigated. If it's considered useful I can update this post in the future when I learn more about the issue? I though it may be useful for future issues etc.

Anyway, thanks for the help, axe0, greatly appreciated.

No I would never advise to update a driver via a program, your manufacturer should provide you the correct driver.
It is their duty as manufacturer of your laptop to give you the correct drivers.

About the power charging problem I can't really help you, but it sounds like a driver conflict with nvidia,

You're welcome :)
