    Memory Test(s)

I'd like to get some guidance on the best way to test my memory. I'm getting some BSODs and I understand memory is a frequent culprit in such cases. I found that Windows has a built-in memory diagnostic, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool: is that a good way to test my memory? I've also heard about memtest86: is that a better tool?

My laptop is an ASUS K55N; I believe it has 8 GB of memory but can't check right this moment as the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool is running.

Download: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
and put it in a USB stick to boot from. You should run the test for at least 4-6 passes unless errors occur before.

NOTE: select Autoinstall for USB Key to download

I've put the .exe on my flash drive and rebooted but the memory test didn't start. Am I going to have to go into my BIOS and tell Windows to boot from the flash drive (F or is there some easier way that doesn't involve messing with the BIOS?

No, you don't put the exe on the flash drive. With the USB stick plugged in, run the .exe to build a bootable USB.

If your MB has a boot menu then from boot menu, select to boot from the USB. If not, you have to change the BIOS setting to boot from the USB.

I've been looking at the Surface Pro and other tablet/laptop convertible machines fitted with Win 8. The top-end models usually offer only flash memory in stead of a hard drive. After my new build froze up during boot up into Windows 8, I tried to run Windows 8's built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic, extended setting, but it got stuck at 21% of 1st pass (10% overall) after running it overnight (at least 12 hours). I had 4x4GB memory modules, and re-ran this test with only...
