Solved Windows 8 Freezing

The amount of times my system freezes appears to be somewhat random, for instance it froze three times just today (Which led me to post this) and other times it would go days without freezing. Usually I will be running Zune, Steam and Google Chrome when it freezes (Though like I mentioned above, sometimes its fine for days without problems).

The specifics of it freezing are something I haven't encountered in any previous Windows OS, where it is what I would call a gradual freeze. First all audio stops, and the taskbar is frozen. Since I am usually in chrome, all system elements like textboxes and menus are are functional but aren't updating (You could type but the text shows up later in chunks, with no indication the field is selected) if you tried to head to the start screen via the windows key you could still click on any of the tiles, but they wont do anything.

For my hardware I have a dell touchscreen monitor, an nVidea GTX 260, intel Core i5 processor, a gigabyte motherboard.

I looked through the other threads of a similar nature and tried turning off automated defragmenting, but I think it might be a driver issue. As such, I have attached the required log files.

I thank you very much in advance for any assistance! It's a shame Microsoft hasn't made any publicity about these problems, since they seem to be plaguing a number of windows users. And if it's just drivers, I can't comprehend why they cant do something about it. I'm sure there are reasons, but their lack of even acknowledging fatal errors in windows 8 makes me a bit sad.

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (Cx05) probably a driver.
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have a Raid update its Driver.

Memtest.
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5-7 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

Driver Verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition.
Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is.
But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver.
Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows.
If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise.
Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation"IRP Logging and Force Pending I/O Requests. and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like.
From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

If you are using win 8 add these

- Concurrency Stress Test
- DDI compliance checking

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.
If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation.

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference

So I ran the first suggested tool for the entirety of today and it ended with 18 passes, 0 errors. I rebooted into Windows, and within the first five minutes it froze >_> so I will try the second option tomorrow. I also have attached the latest version of my crash logs since I did add and remove a few drivers.

Alright, So I updated to the windows 8 Release Preview yesterday in hopes that that would fix my problems, but no such luck. So I've tried installing all of the drivers for my system that I can, here is what I have out of that. Assistance is greatly appreciated!

I have attached the latest version of the log files, with my current drivers installed.

I'd like to add that I am experiencing exactly the same issue as the original poster. I'm using a computer that always worked well with Windows 7 but has had this issue of 'gradually freezing' ever since I installed the Win 8 Consumer Preview on the last day of February. like the original poster, this seems to be random, but I also typically run Chrome and Zune with some other combination of programs. Updating to the Release Preview yesterday did not solve the problem.

I'm not particularly adept at troubleshooting these types of issues, so please let me know what kind of information I could provide that would be of some use. My configuration is as follows: Asus P8P67 LE Motherboard, Intel i5 2500, EVGA GeForce GTX 560, Intel SSD. Standard peripherals. Thanks a lot for any help you can provide.

This is what fixed the freezing for me...
I have a GTX590 and I had to update the video driver to 301.42 in order to fix the freezing. The Win8 version on nvidia's site is for the Win8 CP and not Win8 RP, so download the Win7 driver instead, 301.42.
A new nvidia RP driver is said to be being released next week.

I am having some similar problems that you are having. Did you have any luck installing the Windows 7 drivers? I too have an Nvidia GPU and was wondering if this was the problem. I was on Win 8 CP for months without anything but a hickup and it wasn't until I upgraded my CPU when problems started too come up. I have since gone back to Windows 7 and it has been running smoothly for months. It appears to only be a problem with 8 for me. :\

Guys, try running a task on the background that uses the CPU. Someone in the forums mentioned that the freezes happen when the CPU enters the power saving mode.
You can try disabling C-States if your bios allows it.

My Computer

Nice tip! DM1 offers this suggestion in several threads also (I took this quote from http://www.eightforums.com/crashes-debugging/6990-windows-8-freezes-randomly.html#post96504 ):
If you have no disable C-States option in the BIOS (most laptops don't) you can workaround by creating a new Custom Power Plan and set - as an advanced option - in the Processor Power Management Tab the minimum processor rate at 50-70% ( i set myself at 50%) and the maximum processor rate at the very same value! (50%-50% or 70%-70%).

No crashes since then! Yes it takes from the processing power, but at least the system is stable.
As i noticed here and on other forums, this is an Intel only problem.

At this particular moment in time, I am back to running a stable copy of Windows 7. As Windows 8 was freezing at least once per hour, or whenever I wanted to do anything, which was resulting in serious workflow disruptions as well as data loss, no fix for windows 8 was going to be worth it for me. I could see the above suggested solution working, but as of now it is simply not worth my time or money to use Windows 8.

I thank everyone for their assistance, and encourage others with similar problems who haven't given up yet to create their own article and request assistance.

Just to keep things in one topic:
- play with video driver versions - both the latest available Win8 version from the chipset manufacturer:

Intel: http://downloadcenter.intel.com
nVidia: World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies | NVIDIA
ATI: Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD

and the original version that shipped (and was installed) when Win8 was first installed.

Power states may play a part in this (2 suggestions):

And finally the type of installation.
I've seen a lot of installations that were "Upgrades" - and they have far more problems than the "clean" install.
If yours is an upgrade install and you're having these problems:
- backup your stuff
- wipe the hard drive (format)
- "clean" install Win8, letting Windows Update automatically install the necessary drivers.

hi, maybe I was lucky but this solved windows 8 freezing on my desktop,

1. remove wireless adaptor from my pc
2. pc now connected to router via Ethernet cable
3. window 8 no longer freezing nd is much faster than win 7

I have a Lenovo G585 laptop with an AMD processor. It was built with Win8 Home and Sleep used to work fine. I have installed a lot of apps, downloaded lots of Windows updates and played around with a lot of the windows options. At some point Sleep started blowing up on me. I played with every power option that I had previously messed with to no avail. After finding this I set my minimum processor rate to 100% while plugged in. The problem seems to have gone away. I left my battery setting at 5% and so far that seems to be working although I did not normally put it in Sleep on battery. I'll update this if it fails again. I plan to periodically change it back after new Windows updates in hopes that I can go back to lower power.

Update: It SEEMED to work better. It was failing before after short sleeps. (minutes) But it is still failing after a long sleep (hours). I'm switching to hibernate 100% for now since I don't trust the state of the system after sleep. At least I can set the min processor speed back to 5%.
