BSODs while gaming, fresh 8.1 install nvlddmkm.sys

    Hello,

I recently put together a new build, however I am getting random BSODs with random error messages when I game. It can be a couple days between BSODs or a couple hours. It also has started to BSOD when the computer goes into power save mode where the monitor turns off.

    i5-4690k
    16gb g.skill ripjaw 9-9-9-24 DDR3 RAM
MSI Twin Frozr GeForce 970 4GB
MSI Gamer 5 z97 mobo with Killer E2200 NIC
Samsung EVO 250gb SSD - OS/World of Warcraft
    Seagate Barracuda 1TB data HDD
    Corsair h100i CPU cooler
    3 case fans
    Windows 8.1

Please help me figure this out. I think it's my GPU and I might have to RMA it. My drivers are up to date.

UPDATE - I am getting BSOD's every 2-4 hours now and every time it is a different error message and driver that is erroring out. Please help.

UPDATE 2 - I noticed in HWMonitor that it was reporting my 12V rail only supplying 11.088V. I will grab a multimeter and test this to get a result. BIOS is reporting 12.065V so I'm not sure.

Another BSOD, nvlddmkm.sys. I just re-installed my NVIDIA drivers and I'm still getting crashes.

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

Random BSOD errors are usually hardware related.
Problems with a new build are usually either a bad connection or a faulty piece of hardware.

Start by reseating every single connection in the system. I had to do this with every build I made for almost 20 years - 2 years ago I had my first build that started without any connection problems.

Out of 9 memory dumps there were 7 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):
    - borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
    - BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
    - overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
    - dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case. Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
    - missing Windows Updates
    - compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
    - low-level driver problems
    - or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

Please get a head start on the hardware diagnostics - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Only 97 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 100 to 130 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available (and didn't experience any errors).

Many, many errors from MSIBIOSDataService.exe in the WER section of MSINFO32.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

MSI Afterburner driver (known BSOD issues with Windows) Also found to be a part of MSI Live Update 5 & MSI Super Charger[br] [br] Recently (Nov 2014) there have been numerous instances of this driver in memory dumps. Analysis reveals that they are scattered throughout the filesystem by the installed MSI command utilities. For now I suggest uninstalling them all.}Afterburner | MSI Gaming Series
    http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=NTIOLib_X64.sys

Beyond this I have these 4 suggestions:
    1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
    2. Get ALL available, Win8.1 compatible updates from the manufacturer's website.
    3. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
    4. If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: http://www.carrona.org/verifier.html

    John,

Thank you very much for taking the time to dive in to my problems. I have removed all MSI software (I thought I did before but there was one program left). I also installed new Killer Ethernet drivers. Also, initially in the build I had to re-seat my cooler and I did not re-apply thermal paste and there wasn't full coverage when I put the cooler back on initially. On tuesday, I re-applied thermal paste and re-seated my cooler onto my CPU and I have not experienced any BSODs since. I am waiting a full 48 hours but I believe that this was the issue.

I will update further and mark the thread as solved tomorrow if I do not receive any more BSODs. Thank you again for replying.

Never mind, just got my first blue screen in the past 2 days. I will follow up.

I uninstalled all my MSI stuff, there was only one left on the PC which was MSI Extreme Tuning Utility.

Trying to update my e22w8x64.sys driver however all the links that you included on your site are broken. Trying to find a workaround.

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

I checked the links on my site and the first 2 work. The last one (the update site) is down - most likely due to a problem at http://www.killergaming.com I'll have to find another download site and add it to the site when I get a chance. Meanwhile, use the latest drivers from the MSI website.

Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

    Windows 8.1

I ran memtest about a couple weeks ago over night and my 4 sticks passed. I will run it again tonight. I am currently running the HDD diagnostics and will update.

Per the Killer Network driver, there are two options on the MSI site. One has the suite included (which is known to cause problems) and they have just the driver to download. However, just the driver download is an outdated version it looks like. Which would you advise downloading since the Killer suite is known to cause issues but that's the most recent updated driver?

UPDATE - Both my SSD and HDD passed the Seagate tools tests.

UPDATE 2 - Passed the GPU test, temp maxed out at 65C at 100% usage.

UPDATE 3 - I am manually going through your list of drivers and trying to install the most recent drivers for ones that are 2014 or behind. The Intel Driver Update Utility doesn't automatically detect any new drivers. I installed new versions of what I could.

UPDATE 4 - I have installed just the Killer driver as the MSI forums have suggested without the suite, however this driver that I downloaded directly from MSI's site is from March 2014. Looks like no new updated versions are available.

UPDATE 5 - Reseated my GPU, RAM and my power connections.

Just ran 10.5 hours of memtest, got halfway through the 5th pass. Zero errors. Will attempt more prime95 testing tomorrow but a couple weeks ago I ran prime95 for 4 or 5 hours without any issues.

Also, I think Qualcomm sold the Killer technology to another company, now it's just standalone at Killer Networking - Home however when you install the newest drivers I believe it said Rivet Software or Rivet Technologies. I removed those drivers though. You can update your site with that link but at this point, I'd advise people with Windows 8 to stay away from any Motherboard that has the Killer NIC because the software and drivers are junk.

UPDATE - also did 6 hours of blended tests in prime95, no errors or bsods. Not sure it's fixed yet but we're getting there. Will update if I get a BSOD in the next couple days.

Hi all, I've been tearing my hair out for the last couple of days on a refurbished system build I've been working on. I receive blue screens on a very regular basis - sometimes immediately after boot, other times up to 10 or 15 minutes after booting. The error messages seem to be all over...

I did a fresh install hoping that it would get rid of my BSODs which were numerous. So far, I only have 5 BSODs that I have had the patience to allow Windows to get to 100% on. I easily BSOD once a day, most are with MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I have run memtest86+ ad nauseum...
