Hi guys, my PC started crashing randomly since I first installed Windows 8 on my laptop. I also went on Event Viewer to find the error, probably I found it but i can't solve it. The error is a Dhcp issue (Number 1001) and this is its description: Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x1225D3FC527A. The following error occurred: 0x7B0000. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
I tried to change both the modem and the network card options to keep a static IP, but it seems to not work
If someone can help me, it will really made the difference.

Welcome Random,

That in itself can't crash your system, but we will make it all good in short time.

Just run the tool as Admin in the top thread (and it's linked thread) of this subforum and attach the zip they say to make to a new post here.

You can not use Event Viewer to diagnose stop errors (a.k.a. BSODs). It's simply just not useful in any way at all for that.

Your machine never crashes/crashed as there are no bsod crash dump files, so that is not an issue you have to deal with.

You're missing a very important NVIDIA SMBus MCP79D chipset power management driver:

Code:
Coprocessor PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0AA3&SUBSYS_1FA71043&REV_B1\3&267A616A&1&1D The drivers for this device are not installed.

and you also need to install the proprietary storage driver from the same chipset:

Code:
Name Standard SATA AHCI Controller
Manufacturer Standard SATA AHCI Controller
Status OK
PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0AB9&SUBSYS_1FA71043&REV_B1\3&267A616A&1&58
I/O Port 0x0000C080-0x0000C087

I/O Port 0x0000B800-0x0000B80F
Memory Address 0xFAE76000-0xFAE77FFF
IRQ Channel IRQ 20
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\storahci.sys (6.2.8250.0, 70,30 KB (71.992 bytes), 18/02/2012 05.37)

Visit ASUS' site for your motherboard to download and install latest of those. SMBus driver will be in the extracted folder of the same name. Use device manager to install both drivers if the installer doesn't install them well.

Install latest Atheros driver for your Qualcomm wireless adapter (AR9285):

ATHEROS Wireless drivers for Windows

Also update your router's firmware to latest and then after, reset it to factory defaults.

Uninstall AVG in safe mode with the special tool. Reboot and set Windows Firewall and Windows Defender to auto and start them too.

Enjoy the machine and Windows 8. Have fun. :)

Sorry for the late response but my laptop crashed several Times, even during drivers installation. Anyway I still have a lot of problems (I haven't got motherboard model, my router can't be updated, i can't even turn on Windows Defender and Windows Firewall). I'll better solve this tomorrow, now i'll better go to sleep. Thanks again GMan, you're really helping me a lot.

No, really, it didn't. Whatever your definition of a crash is, it is not correct. Maybe a program crashed or maybe Windows froze, but it didn't crash.

System Model K50ID

Router surely can be updated if there is available image to update to.

You didn't remove AVG as shown yet, that's why you are having difficulty with the services. You can do that first before anything else.

It's all already solved for you. You're welcome.

Windows 8 shut down, restart

This might appear simplistic but I have found that Windows 8 uses more cpu resources and hence laptops run hotter. If you have a laptop that's over 3 years old your problem maybe overheating. Under the previous operating system this may not have been an issue. Any laptop over 3 years old will have a substantial amount of dust caught on the heat sink restricting air flow.

The most common problem with an older laptop that's been 'upgraded' is that it simply stops completely and instantly whilst your working.

I would recommend gaining access to the fan, vacuum out the dust and seeing if that cures it before anything else. I have found this to fix many laptops with a new installation of Windows 8. If your problem persists, no matter as you have at least carried out a bit of important maintenance.
