    BSOD seemingly connected to Dota 2 shutdowns

    So I've been trying to solve this problem for a while and decided that I needed help.

    Recently I upgraded my system with a new graphics card (XFX Radeon R9 270X 2GB GDDR5) and it seems that the problems started around that time. There are two error, and they seem to be connected.

    When I play dota 2, and only when I play dota 2, I get seemingly random shutdowns of the game, just as if I had hit alt-F4. No error message to be found. I also started to get BSODs of different sorts, but they seemed to occur when I was playing dota 2, often when the game had just crashed and was started again.

    I've reinstalled my drivers, swapped my ram-blocks, reinstalled windows 7 and 8.1, done memory tests, checked for graphics card overheating, but nothing seems to help. I feel like the next step is to check logs, but I am no good at that level.

    Would be happy to get some insight or at least a push in the right direction, because I am starting to run out of ideas.

    Let me know if you need anymore specific info.

    Hi abstrakten & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

    I have analysed your dump files and below has been provided an analysis of the same for informative purposes :-

    ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY (fc)
    An attempt was made to execute non-executable memory. The guilty driver is on the stack trace (and is typically the current instruction pointer). When possible, the guilty driver's name (Unicode string) is printed on the bugcheck screen and saved in KiBugCheckDriver.
    Sadly, the minidump did not save the KiBugCheckDriver variable
    Below is the stack -
    Code:
    1: kd> knL
     # Child-SP          RetAddr           Call Site
    00 ffffd000`2247b308 fffff801`014225fa nt!KeBugCheckEx
    01 ffffd000`2247b310 fffff801`013f8f83 nt!MI_CHECK_KERNEL_NOEXECUTE_FAULT+0x4d74a
    02 ffffd000`2247b350 fffff801`012ded29 nt!MiSystemFault+0x240d3
    03 ffffd000`2247b3f0 fffff801`013cec2f nt!MmAccessFault+0x769
    04 ffffd000`2247b5b0 ffffe001`48afda40 nt!KiPageFault+0x12f
    05 ffffd000`2247b740 ffffc001`85508b00 0xffffe001`48afda40
    06 ffffd000`2247b748 00000000`00000001 0xffffc001`85508b00
    07 ffffd000`2247b750 ffffe001`4b41e140 0x1
    08 ffffd000`2247b758 00000000`00000000 0xffffe001`4b41e140
    Sadly, the dump file did not save enough information

    The BIOS of the motherboard is now 5 years old :0 -
    Code:
    1: kd> !sysinfo machineid
    Machine ID Information [From Smbios 2.6, DMIVersion 0, Size=1603]
    BiosMajorRelease = 8
    BiosMinorRelease = 15
    BiosVendor = American Megatrends Inc.
    BiosVersion = P1.60
    BiosReleaseDate = 09/14/2010
    SystemManufacturer = To Be Filled By O.E.M.
    SystemProductName = To Be Filled By O.E.M.
    SystemFamily = To Be Filled By O.E.M.
    SystemVersion = To Be Filled By O.E.M.
    SystemSKU = To Be Filled By O.E.M.
    BaseBoardManufacturer = ASRock
    BaseBoardProduct = 870 Extreme3
    BaseBoardVersion =
    I would suggest you to update the BIOS from the below link -
    ASRock > Support

    Please note that updating/flashing BIOS is a very RISKY process. I repeat a very risky process and even a small mistake can make the motherboard paper weight.

    I would also suggest you to try and run Windows 7 and see if that solves your problem or not. I am asking this because I don't see any 3rd party drivers which could cause these problems.

    Let me know how it goes ^_^

    Thanks for the analysis

    Hey! Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the help!

    Since posting I've tried replacing the coolerpaste on my CPU (and by replacing I really mean applying something where the wasn't any). That might've done the trick, but since I can't reliably reproduce the error, I am not certain.

    If the error happens again I will go ahead and post the new dumpfiles here, and try the solutions you suggested, although I find it hard that to believe that windows seven will do me any good, since that was the OS I started experiencing these errors on

    But in any case, thanks for your time and effort! Much appreciated!

    Hi Abstrakten ^_^,

    That could have done the trick as well. How is your system holding up until now? Any crashes? If yes, please upload the latest ZIP file and I will take a look at it

    Let me know how it goes ^_^

    Hi again!

    It seems as though it fixed the problem. At least I have not had any crashes since then. But while tinkering with the CPU, I suddenly had some weird boot issues, which turned out to be a loose connection to my secondary harddrive. I assumed that i had knocked it loose while removing the cabinet, but it could've been loose for longer, and that sort of thing can cause a whole array of problems.

    But I mostly believe that the CPU was shutting down due to overheating, which would explain the lack of information in the minidumps, and also the different BSOD errors that was given, seeing that whichever instruction was run at the given time, was probably the one that was blamed for the shutdown.

    If it starts acting up again, I've decided that 5 years is a long time to use the same motherboard and CPU and that I will replace those parts, as I have done with pretty much everything else. If the problem still lingers I will probably come crawling back here for more help

    But thanks for taking the time to look into my problem!

    Hi Abstrakten ^_^,

    Glad to hear that the problem has been solved. Yes, it could have been the CPU overheating.

    In case of any further problems, please do not hesitate to post back ^_^
