Random Windows 8.1 BSOD while browsing - atikmdag.sys

Hi All,

Forgive me, I am the n00est of n00bs.

My relatively new, Black Friday '14 Toshiba Satellite Satellite C75D-B7260 laptop has started randomly and unpredictably crashing to BSOD, with following error message:

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (atikmdag.sys)

This happens maybe once or twice a day at some point in 4-6 hours of computer use. The timing is completely unpredictable. It usually happens while I'm browsing in Mozilla Firefox with multiple tabs, but that is what I do 80% of the time anyway, so I doubt that's a factor. I've also watched hours of Netflix via the Windows 8 app, without any crashes.

The computer says it'll restart itself, however even after waiting as much as 30 minutes, it never does. I inevitably have to manually power the computer off and then start it again.

I've searched the atikmdag.sys error extensively in various forums, but have been very hesitant to follow solutions proposed as none of the problems seem to be an exact duplicate of my own. I am terrified of accidentally blowing up my computer by uninstalling or replacing drivers.

Plus, there are a million drivers for this model on the Toshiba website alone (Drivers & Software Support | Toshiba), so I don't know where to even start.

I get sweaty with nerves whenever I use my computer now, so any help would be hugely and eternally appreciated!

- Christina

If using TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 or OpenVPN driver remove it please.
I would suggest you to uninstall the currently installed AMD Driver using the Display Driver Tool from this **LINK**. Once it has removed the drivers, reinstall the latest drivers from the AMD Website and see if the crashes persist or not.

Hi, thanks for the super-fast response!

1. I think I correctly uninstalled Private Internet Access (the VPN program I use on open wifi networks), and deleted TAP-Win32 Adapter V9.

2. I installed the AMD Driver Autodetect from here (AMD Driver Autodetect).

3. I ran the AMD Driver Autodetect, which said I needed to download "amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-without-dotnet45-win8.1-64bit.exe" (screencap)
attachment.php

4. I clicked "download," then went and found the download in the folder noted (screencap). I double-clicked to run the app, but...
View attachment 58453

5. I got this error message that "this app can't run on your PC"
View attachment 58454

Now I feel totally stuck, no idea what to do!

Last, I ran the DM Log collector tool again to track possible changes? I don't know if that helps or not, but I thought it couldn't hurt?

Okay, I grabbed this AMD Display Driver from your link: Satellite C75D-B7260 Support | Toshiba

I guess at this point, I wait and see?

If I may ask, most of the time I have to have my computer on an open and extremely vulnerable wifi network, which is why I was using a VPN (a pay VPN, no less!), https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/.

I uninstalled per your instructions, but is this something I can reinstall?

I wouldn't recommend it (while we are troubleshooting). After we sort out the crashes. Feel free to do whatever you want. If BSODs reappear, you'll know what's causing them.

Okay, thanks very much!

I'll try to stay off the open wireless for a few days and stick to my personal cellphone hotspot. No Netflix! :(

The BSODs weren't reliable, so I'll have to test for 3-5 days before I'll know if we've healed it.

I'll certainly be back to let you know either way, and to donate to DDU if appropriate.

Thanks again so much! You're an angel!

Okay! Update time! No BSODs, since my last posting, although I didn't turn my computer on during the weekend. But I was on the internet for about 4-5 hours a night, browsing and using the windows 8 Netflix app with zero problems!

Then I tried to reinstall Private Internet Access VPN about an hour ago. As soon as it finished installing and I opened PIA VPN started to connect...

BAM!!!

BSOD: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (atikmdag.sys) all over again!

I'm too n00by to declare with confidence that's the culprit, but it seems unlikely to be coincidental.

I repeated exactly all the steps outlined above to get ride of Private Internet Access VPN and reinstall the AMD driver.

Then I contacted PIA VPN customer service. They appear to be blaming the problem on Kaspersky, or possibly IPv6. I linked to our exchange here to give them the background. This was our chat support session:

Jason W: If you are getting a BSOD there could be corruption in your windows install, or a service running in the background conflicting with our software.

Jason W: Did you run the installer for our application as administrator?

Me: Yes, I did. After uninstalling PIA, I didn't have any BSOD for almost a week. Then, tonight, I reinstalled and within minutes of opening PIA I had the same BSOD.

Jason W: Do you have any anti-virus, firewall, or security software installed on your computer? It is possible this could be interfering with the VPN connection.

Me: Yes, I'm using Kaspersky. The VPN connection itself seemed to work great with Kaspersky until the BSOD started happening. The diagonistics don't seem to indicate the security software is the problem. atikmdag.sys BSOD is an AMD display driver issue.

Jason W: Our application runs as the following executables found inside c:program Files pia_manager
openVPN.exe
pia_manager.exe
tapinstall.exe
installer_win.exe
pia_tray.exe

Can you ensure that none of these are being blocked or filtered by your security software? You may need to add them to your exclusion list in your anti virus software.

Me: I actually have PIA completely uninstalled at the moment, so I'm unable to check. I might test for another week to see if having PIA off my system prevents BSODs, then attempt to reinstall a final time. Any tips for that?

Jason W: Be sure run the installer as administrator.

Jason W: 1. Download a fresh copy of our software: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/installer/download_installer_win 2. Right-click on the installation file, and choose Run as Administrator. 3. If the App installs successfully, go to Start and Locate Private Internet Access 4. Right-click on the Private Internet Access program file, and choose Open File Location. 5. Right-click on the Private Internet Access shortcut in the resulting folder, and choose Properties. 6. Go to the Compatibility tab at the top, and enable the option "Run this program as an administrator" at the bottom of the window. 7. Apply all changes, and say Ok out of any windows remaining open.

Jason W: There are two common compatibility issues with our software in Windows 8. The first is IPv6. IPv6 seems to cause connection issues with our VPN service, so we recommend disabling it. Instructions on disabling IPv6 can be found here: Disable IPv6 on Windows 8

The other common fix to issues with our software in Windows 8 is to set the client to run in Compatibility mode for Windows 7. To do this: Go into Program Files (not Program Files x86) and look for the pia_manager folder. Open it. Right click the pia_manager.exe and click troubleshoot. Choose the option, "This program worked in a previous version of Windows" When asked what version of Windows the program worked in, choose Windows 7 Test the program now, and close the troubleshooter. Reboot the computer, and test again.

My question is, it worth trying to follow these instructions? Do either of the tech's suggestions have a possibility of working, or is he just giving me boilerplate advice?

If not, is there a VPN solution that you personally like or recommend? I have to be on a public business wifi for a goodly portion of each day, so ideally I need a very portable hardware or software solution.

Thanks again so kindly!

The culprit is indeed AMD's driver. However, you stated that it only occurs when connecting to their VPN? The driver could be "calling" the AMD driver causing it to crash. You can try adding these files to exclusions (but you usually get a warning if and when something is blocked). Unless you have your AV in Gaming/Silent mode however you want to call it. The part with compatibility issues is really worth a shot. I am personally using Cisco VPN on three of my computers and I have to run it in compatibility mode for W7 and as Admin or else it refuses to connect, but it doesn't give me a BSOD if the connection fails. If nothing helps try uninstalling it and testing your computer without it. If it doesn't crash, that's very likely to be the culprit. Thanks for keeping me updated.
Kind regards,
Mihael

Oh, no! It Happened Again!

Oh no, now I'm freaking out!

I hadn't made any chances since my last post (removing the VPN, updating the driver from the Toshiba site again), and the computer was working fine, but I just got another BSOD with SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (atikmdag.sys).

Except this time, instead of getting stuck on the "we'll restart for you" blue screen (forcing me to eventually manually power off), my computer went into the restart process by itself.

Then it went into the windows 8 "Updating, do not turn off" screen. It cycled through the progress process twice, then eventually went to the standard lock-log in screen as usual.

I ran a new DM log right away, it's attached. Any ideas?

My guess would be that you use Firefox as a browser. If so, you will find using another browser will cure your "problem". I have the same laptop as you (Satellite C75D-B7260} and have been fighting this error for several weeks. Tried several different Display Adapters from Toshiba, AMD and Generic while using Firefox. I even tried operating on only one CPU core, then 2 cores, then three and back to four and a few other complicated "solutions" found through Google, all to no avail.

I hate Internet Explorer with a purple passion but decided to experiment. Lo and behold, went a week with no BSOD ATIKMDAG.SYS while using IE. So then started using Opera and was much better than IE and still no BSOD's after a week. I then ran across an aside comment in a Forum post somewhere where a poster mentioned all his problems occurred while using Firefox but went away when he disabled "Hardware Acceleration". I disabled that setting over a week ago now and have had no BSOD's while using my favorite Firefox. I had just decided my fix worked and was about to post the fix on the Toshiba Support Forums when someone else reported the same success.

Start Firefox, click on the Settings Menu at the upper right side and then Options. Click on the Advanced Tab and uncheck the box alongside "Use Hardware Accelleration Where Available". Restart Firefox. I have not found any problems with that setting unchecked. As a plus, FF actually loads a bit faster than before and goes to website addresses a bit faster. AND, no BSOD's.

I hope this works for you.

Wow, thanks for the advice, cbwilsha!

You were right, I was indeed using Firefox. I've disabled hardware acceleration, so I'll test it for a while and see how things go. Thanks for the tip.

Oh, and are you using a VPN yourself? Does it cooperate?

No, I don't use VPN so can't comment about that. BTW, if you haven't already, you ought to visit the Toshiba Laptop Forums at laptopforums.toshiba.com where you can learn a lot about your laptop. I've volunteered there for several years and we have quite a few very knowledgeable folks available for questions and problem solving.

All the support details for your specific machine are located HERE. The latest AMD Display Driver for your model is HERE in case you need it.

I finally broke down after years of either making due with P3 equivalent/ Amd socket A desktop (circa 2001) [ Internet wise I go back as far as AOL 2.0 ] now running win7 or dead laptops from friends/neighbors and reviving them, to a brand new system that has issues basically out of the box a bit disheartening, hoping to hell that disabling Hardware acceleration resolves this issue, crossing everything but my transistors
