Solved BSOD when connecting to an External Display

Hello,
I've been trying to fix this problem for a couple of days with long phone calls to Dell and Asus coming to no avail.
My Alienware 15 laptop will happily to connect to other monitors and TVs via HDMI (without BSOD).
However whenever I try to connect it to my Asus PB287Q Monitor, I get an instant BSOD with error line PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (igdkmd64.sys).
I have tried troubleshooting by connecting via DP and HDMI (and using a range of cables). I have tried powering both on together and separately.
The Monitor works fine with other laptops via both HDMI and DP connections.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Apologies to anyone who may have had a look into this. I foolishly upgraded to windows 8.1 Pro to see if it made a difference (it didn't). I have re-run the driver utility and have attached the new zipped folder.

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Virtual Miniport Adapter for Windows x64 ROOT\NET\0000 This device is disabled.

Disabled device. Why?

Disable nVidia Streaming Kernel Service within services.msc.

The Qualcomm Atheros Killer Service/KillerNetManager is known to cause BSOD's. Please follow the workaround instructions here:
First, open the Run dialog (Win + R keys) and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Scroll down and locate the "Qualcomm Atheros Killer Service" and right click on it. Select "Stop"
Right click on it again and this time select "Properties"
In the dropdown box for "Startup type", select "Disabled", then click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window

Next, open Task Manager (right click on TaskBar and select "Task Manager")
Click on the "More details" dropdown (if present)
Click on the "Startup" tab
Scroll down and locate the "KillerNetManager" entry, right click on it and select "Disable"
There may also be an Install Shield (with the Killer gaming K next to it), if so Right click on it and select "Disable"
Finally, restart the system in order for the changes to take affect.

At times the Killer Network Manager will continue to load. If so, it's usually listed in the MSINFO32...Software Environment...Startup Programs section. If it is, please try this:
It may be that the instructions aren't stopping everything.
In some cases, there's a program running out of the Program Files/Program Files (x86) directory.
"c:\program files\qualcomm atheros\killer network manager\killer~1.exe" (NOTE: killer~1.exe is most likely killernetmanager.exe)
In other cases, there's a program running out of c:\windows\installer\{Long string of letters, numbers, and dashes}\networkmanager.exe_130c27d738f34c89bddf21bcfd74b56d.exe (the long string of letters and numbers may change)

Here's some things to try
1) Please see if there are any entries in the Startup tab of Task Manager that are related to Qualcomm/Atheros/Killer Network Manager (and NOT the card itself) and disable them (please let us know what you find) Be careful as the wrong selection can disable the network card.
2) Check in "msconfig" for any entries that aren't in the Startup tab of Task Manager. Let us know if you find any Qualcomm/Atheros/Killer entries there (we'll disable them differently if they are there).
3) Locate the "c:\program files\qualcomm atheros\killer network manager\killer~1.exe" and rename the .exe to .BAD (the killer~1 is actually a filename that starts with killer and ends with .exe) There will be an error in event viewer, but it'll stop the bugger from loading.
4) Locate the "c:\windows\installer\{Long string of letters, numbers, and dashes}\networkmanager.exe_130c27d738f34c89bddf21bcfd74b56d.exe" entry and rename the .exe to .BAD (the long string of letters and numbers may change)

Just FYI - here are the MSI workaround instructions: MSI USA

Hello Softwaremaniac,
Thanks for the reply.
I am going on an unexpected holiday, so I won't be able to try the solutions until I get back to my troublesome monitor.
As soon as I am back on the 22/02/15, I will attempt your fixes (fingers crossed they work and you can have a thumbs up).

Kind regards,
Ravvinit

Hello,
Managed to find some wifi so I thought I'd have a crack at making the changes you suggested.

I've done everything you stated. I'm not sure why the Cisco Any Connect was disabled, but I've uninstalled the program (I have no use for it).

I checked the msConfig and found the service AtherosSvc running in the services tab. There is nothing running in the startup tab that is from qualcomm/Atheros/Killer.

I have also updated the driver software.

Hello, Unfortunately I'm still getting the BSOD whenever I connect to the monitor. Not sure what it could be, but I'm hoping to find someone who has another 4k monitor that I can try connecting to, I'll keep this thread updated.

Here are the up to date dump files

I have also checked the event viewer and the log that causes the crash states this :
'The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device ACPI\INT3400\2&daba3ff&2.'

I've installed the newest driver from dell, but the issue still occurs, with the same log in the the event viewer.

Drivers in red need to be taken care of. Please uninstall PC Doctor driver.

Also, in the first dump file, the Killer Network Manger is blamed. This has caused problems in the past. I would suggest you to follow the below quote (Follow Note 2 first. If it does not work, follow note 1) -
(Thanks Usasma!)At times the Killer Network Manager may cause BSOD problems:

NOTE1:Link thanks to blueelvis (15Oct2014): https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=178064.0 This is a method for removing all the network software and only installing the driver. Perfect for those issues that can't be resolved any other way!

NOTE2: See this link first: BSOD while playing on msi gt70 dragon edition 2 (thanks to kaelaan) It appears that the Killer Service problem was solved with the latest release of the Qualcomm versions of the drivers (so try updating to a version dated from later in 2014).

4) Locate the "c:\windows\installer\{Long string of letters, numbers, and dashes}\networkmanager.exe_130c27d738f34c89bddf21bcfd74b56d.exe" entry and rename the last .exe to .BAD (the long string of letters and numbers may change)

Please try the below steps.

1. Run "Intel driver update Utility" and install any update it offers.

Intel® Driver Update Utility

2. Update "DirectX".

Download DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Official Microsoft Download Centre

3. Set "Intel HD Graphics" to "Maximum Performance".

Please follow steps 3 and 4 described in 4 Ways to Improve Intel HD Graphics Performance

How are you connecting the monitor?

WUDFRd is a service and it is called "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework".
Windows Administration - What Is wudfsvc and wudfsvc.dll

I went into services.msc and looked at Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework, it was set to manual, but under "Status" it was off. I plugged in a USB and the status changed to "Started".

I changed the startup type to "Automatic", shut down the PC, restarted, checked to see that it was still set to automatic and that it was started. Plugged in a USB and no error code, plugged in another USB and no error code. Shut down, started again, checked again and no error code.

If you change Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework to automatic start let me know if it works for you. Also before you change it the service has to be stopped. For some reason you can not stop it after it has started so you need to boot your PC and before you do anything go into services.msc and change it before it has started. Your PC may let you stop it, but mine would not.

Try this.

Thanks again for the reply, unfortunately there has been no change.

I followed note 2, however I saw no change, and therefore tried note 1. THe link to the killer cleaner redirected to killer itself, but I couldn't find a link to killer cleaner.
I found one here : http://www.opendrivers.com/download/driver-167472.html (under the backup download server). I'm not sure if this is the same program.

I then uninstalled the killer software using windows uninstaller, then I used the cleaner and reinstalled the drivers. Only the ethernet drivers needed to be installed, the wireless drivers didn't uninstall. Should I uninstall these aswell and install the pure drivers?

I have also downloaded the intel driver utility which updated the intel graphics driver.

I updated the DirectX

I have also changed the Intel graphics settings as per your request.

In terms of connecting to the monitor, I have used both DP and HDMI.

I changed the Windows Driver Foundation to automatic start. However I was unsure as to what you meant by, before I changed the service I should stop it. I tried to boot the pc and go into services and stop it, however it wouldn't let me.

I tried pointing the driver installers to those drivers, however the installer couldn't find the right driver within those files.
I unzipped them and set the search to include the subfolders.

If it doesn't find anything, just monitor your system for crashes. If it crashes again, upload the dump files.

Hey Software Maniac, Thanks for the help, but unfortunately my whole laptop decided to crash (MOBO issue) and I've therefore replaced it with a different one (which connects fine to the screen).
Thanks for your time and patience

BSOD when I connect Zenbook NX500 to ASUS PB287Q

I seem to be having a very similar issue. I have an ASUS ZenBook NX500JK running Windows 8.1 Pro. As soon as I plug in my new ASUS PB287Q monitor I get a BSOD with the following message:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (igdkmd64.sys)

I'm able to plug in other (lower resolution) monitors without any issues... I've never had a crash except whenever I try to plug in the PB287Q.

Initially I'd thought it was due to an old driver issue for the Intel HD 4600 graphics on the Zenbook since that's what idkmd64.sys is related to... ASUS has a very old version of the driver on the official support page (version 10.18.10.3540). After the BSOD did a manual forced update to the Intel version of the driver (10.18.14.4222), but I get the same BSOD whenever I try to plug the PB287Q in.

I've read the spec sheets on the HD 4600 and it appears that it should support output at 4K resolution. And for sure the NVIDIA 850M supports that resolution.

I've reached out to ASUS support for the monitor and they've punted me over to support for the laptop, but I'm not hopeful that they'll be able to help.

I've attached the results from the DM Log collector tool below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I seem to have solved my own problem (and this is probably specific to my hardware setup). I rolled the Intel HD 4600 driver back to version 10.18.10.3308 and then connected the external display and it didn't give me a BSOD. Then I updated the driver to version 10.18.14.4222 and it didn't BSOD.

I have absolutely no idea why this works... but for anybody that's getting a BSOD with the same error message this might be something to try.

That makes sense because Intel HD is your Graphics driver and as such it is in charge of displaying the image on the screen.
