Random restarts, never seen BSOD, Kernal Power 41

Yes. Per first post: In addition to the random shutdowns, which we've been addressing, it exhibits one other odd behavior: Whenever I tell the system to shutdown, it will do so, turn off, and within 5 seconds turn back on.

Some of the SSD related changes I made two days ago APPEAR (though I am nowhere ready to declare victory) to have solved the issue of random shutdowns, but not of restarting after a planned shutdown.

Try this: Press (Windows Key)+R and type in regedit and hit enter. Locate the following key:

    Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

    Double Click on "PowerdownAfterShutdown"

Change it to "0" if it is "1" OR
Change it to "1" if it is "0".

    And hit Enter.

Then restart the computer and after it restarts try to shutdown again. Hopefully this will work for you.

***If this doesn't work make sure you change the value in regedit back to what it was originally***

So I apologies for not responding for a bit - my future mother in law was in town, so it was a bit crazy here.

    Some updates:
    1. Regarding the random shutdowns:
    - I've had several tests now where, as long as something is occurring on the computer, it will no longer randomly shutdown. I've done tests of 3 hours, 4 hours, and 9 hours, and everything seems to be fine as long as I keep something open, such as twitch, or am actively working/playing games/etc.
    2. That said, if I leave it completely idle, ie, turn on the computer, log in, and then do nothing, it will start randomly restarting - every 31 minutes. This morning, I used the computer, and then left it on while I went to work. The entire day, every 31 minutes, it restarted. Nothing obvious in event manager that matches up with those restarts.

So, I'm confused. I'm at the point where I can function, which is great, but it still clearly has something going on.

Regarding the restarting issue when I tell it to shutdown - it still does that, your suggested solution unfortunately did nothing.

I'm stumped. Any other thoughts, for either issue>?

Check your Advanced Power Options in the Control Panel, pull up your power plan and then go into advanced settings. But it would be a Hibernate function, not a full shut down. Disable hibernation. Check BIOS settings for some kind of a Power Option, check Task Scheduler.

Advanced power options - all hibernate options are off (only one I see is around the hard drive). Sleep is set for 30 minutes (matching up to the restart issue when idle).

Did not see anything in BIOS that would relate - the only ACPI setting I have is around motherboard LEDs

Nothing obvious in Task scheduler, but this is the first I've looked at it.

I can confirm that it relates to sleep - I manually told the computer to sleep, and it fully shutdown, so I'm pretty sure it's something with the sleep settings (which matches to the 30/31 minute timer on restarts I saw yesterday while idle).

    Try disabling sleep then.

Lol - Yea, that will do it (though not solve whatever the problem is). That said, I'm about 75% sure that issue is related to my wireless card, which I am not going to replace at the moment.

For now, I'm going to mark this as solved (and open a new thread if I continue to fight with the restart upon shutdown issue).

For those who experience a similar random shutdown problem with Windows 8.1, here are the things I did that seem to have fixed it. Of note, this only applies if you have installed Windows 8.1 on an SSD.
    1. Windows 8.1 does not automatically optimize the SSD, so you have to do it yourself.
    2. In my case, with my Samsung SSD, I used Samsung Magic to optimize. This is basically the TRIM command (instead of defragging).
    3. You can do that with windows itself, but you basically have to "force" the issue. I did not do this.
    4. I also changed the SATA cable, just in case.
    5. This is the post that pointed me in the direction:

Once I did the optimize and SATA change, all of my random restart issues went away.

Softwaremaniac - thank you for all of your help!
