Win 8.1 crashes on video playback, no BSOD or error code

    Hi all,

I need some help troubleshooting this nagging issue, which I've been unable to diagnose. In a nutshell, here are the facts:

    • The system either hangs and/or reboots
    • The hang and/or reboot occurs only during video playback (XBMC, Youtube, etc)
    • The hang/reboot is intermittent. Sometimes I can play entire movies without issues.
    • Originally, I was using onboard video and thought that perhaps I was taxing the onboard graphics or that there was an issue with the native video drivers, so I installed a Radeon 5850. Unfortunately, the same symptoms persisted even with the graphics card installed.
    • There is no BSOD or minidump created during the hang/reboot.
    • The eventvwr only shows this message after the reboot:
      • The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

    Quick System Specs:

    • ASUS P8Z77-V LE PLUS
    • i5 2300
    • 8GB RAM
    • 6 x HDD
    • 750w Corsair PSU
    • Windows v8.1 Pro x64

Anyone have any idea where to start digging?

Hi Paes & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

I checked your reports. There are lot of Event ID : 41 errors in your log files which suggest that Windows did not know why it Shut Down. This could be due to a piece of software causing the hang or a piece of broken hardware. Kindly perform the below steps -
    1. Kindly remove the Catalyst Control Centre (CCC.exe) as it is well known to cause problems and I see loads of errors related to the CCC in your MSINFO32 report. Kindly uninstall this software.
    2. Kindly follow the Hardware Diagnostics over here (thanks usasma) - Hardware Diagnostics
    3. Are you experiencing any Windows Update installation failures? Make sure that your system is up-to-date in Windows Update.

Let me know how it goes ^_^

Thanks a lot for the reply. A few things:

    • Removing CCC was the first thing I did. The symptoms persist.
    • No Windows update failures.

There are tons of diags in the link you suggested, so it will take me some time to work through them. I will report my results.

I just completed a CPU stress test using the Intel tool and it passed. I'm moving on to other tests now. I noticed that my machine rebooted overnight (at around 2AM) when it was not running any video related applications, so it seems there is no relationship there.

Was the restart initiated by you or it was automatic?

Let me know how it goes ^_^. If the symptoms still persist after the Diagnostics and you are not able to find anything, kindly re-run the SF Diagnostic Tools and upload a freshly generated ZIP File.

I had this same exact problem and searched for hours before I found the solution, I assume you probably figured out how to fix it by now but for others who might view this I have to pass on the info. My friend referred me to a site with windows recovery files, I really didn't expect it to work as I have tried similar things before but I have to say it was the best thirty bucks I ever spent! And I have used it to fix my computer and friends and familys computers many times in the past year or so. I'd say it's a must buy for anyone being that you never know when these darn computers are going to take a crap. Anyways here's the website... Good luck all!!! Windows Recovery PRO

The restart was not initiated by me and shows the same sequence of events in the logs. I ran some diagnostics using Hwinfo64 and the system does not seem to be overheating. I ran memory tests using memtest86 and there are no issues with the RAM. Not sure where to go next with this. I have attached the latest log captures.

Thanks for the suggestion. Here are the results:

    Attachment 56236

I'm going to watch some youtube videos now to see if I can replicate the crash. I will post my results shortly.
