Solved BSOD playing the Sims 3 : DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend recently bought a new Acer laptop. As she's more of a casual user I went through it beforehand to remove all of the usual crud.

Specs :
i5-4310U
4GB RAM
GeForce 840M + intel HD graphics
64 bit Windows 8.1 all updates

She's a fan of the Sims, so she downloaded and installed though origin as per usual. On launching the game all was fine until she got past the sim creation menu and into the game proper, where the game froze, the comuter hung, and eventually went to a Blue Screen DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (0x133).

I had a look around, updated the nVidia drivers, etc. but it happened again. So I put all the setting to low and it seemed ok. The laptop has a GT 840M so I thought it could probably go higher, but after a short while playing on medium settings, it happened again. I checked, the Sims is being run on the NVidia card, not on the Intel one.

Here are the dmp and log files for the 3 crashes. Everything else works fine on the PC, even other games from Origin, like Plants vs Zombies.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Before we proceed further with the troubleshooting, kindly make sure that you have RESET the Overclock on the laptop. According to the dump files, your laptop is overclocked. Kindly RESET your BIOS settings to STOCK Settings. Once the system is stabilized, you are free to overclock.

For laptops, it is advised to use only the drivers from the manufacturer. You are experiencing the DPC_Watchdog_Violation and the driver being blamed by the Dump files is the NVIDIA Driver.
Kindly remove the currently installed NVIDIA Driver using this **TOOL**. Once it is done, kindly reboot the system.
Now, download the latest VGA Driver for NVIDIA from the below support page for your laptop model -
Download Drivers and Manuals | Acer Official Site

Make sure you select the Operating System as Windows 8.1.

Let me know how it goes ^_^

Pranav,

Thanks for your time !

I haven't overclocked the processor at all... Is it possible that this was done by the manufacturer or the vendor ? Other than that, all I can think of is the Turbo mode for Intel processors.

I'll have a look in the BIOS ASAP and follow your guide for reinstalling the nVidia drivers. I'll get back soon.

Thanks again !

It is possible, but I would suggest you to reset the BIOS settings in order to make sure that the system is not overclocked.

Hi again Pranav,

What a week ! I didn't have the time to try anything out until today. At least I know that the OC is stable when not playing games, she hasen't had a single problem since not playing the sims.

I went into the BIOS, but there were no settings for overclocking. I suspect this is because Acer have loaded their own proprietary ROM which disables these options. I am reluctant to flash a new ROM because this would void the warranty on her computer.
So I then have uninstalled NVidia drivers using DDU, which worked fine, and have reinstalled the new Windows 8.1 drivers that I dowloaded from the Acer website.

All went well.

She'll try it out during the week. I'll get back to you before the weekend and update the situation, and hopefully be able to mark the thread as solved !

Thanks for all your help.

Ben

Hello again,

Well, it happened again. Exactly the same error as before. I doubt the overclock is the problem, because the PC was perfectly cool when it happened (I was there). It's probably just Turbo Boost.

Here are the new log files.

Thanks for your help. We'll probably go to the sales staff for a refund or replacement though, because it is still under warranty.

Hi mfunebre ^_^,

Are you sure that you downloaded the right NVIDIA Update? Just checked your dump files and they tell me that the NVIDIA Driver is dated in January 2014. I checked the website and for Windows 7 the NVIDIA Driver version is October 2014. The Windows 8.1 64bit tab is not working for me for some reason.

I would also suggest you to update the Intel Graphics Driver using the same above link.

Also, are you getting the Blue Screen only while playing Sims or is it crashing randomly?

Pranav,

You're right, the website does say October 2014. I will do it again and make sure, but I'm fairly certain. I'll also do the Intel Drivers. Stayed tuned for an update ASAP !

The PC is stable all the time so far. She doesn't play many games so I can't tell if it is a Sims-related problem or something else. All I know is video, streaming, desktop stuff, simple games, and Dragon Age : Origins all work fine.

Thanks !

Pranav,

It's the overclocking. I thought it was Turbo Boost, but I installed CPU-Z and it turns out the processor is always at 2.4GHz instead of 1.7. I've submitted a ticket to the Acer site.

Thanks for all your help !
