Windows Defender shouldn't be causing problems on your system.
I'd suggest posting over in the System Security forums for some suggestions: https://www.eightforums.com/system-security/

You may also want to run this:
Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
    Code:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    Code:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
    Code:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

Found a support thread on a game explaining the exact same problem I had, and solutions suggested were either to add the games to the real-time exception list so that Windows Defender wont grind my computer to a halt trying to scan it, or to disable real-time protection. I'll edit the post with results of Dism/sfc scan anyways.

Edit: Results of Dism & sfc:

    Attachment 55851

Edit #2: Computer is running better with me throwing games in the exception list (other than at startup, but I think I can figure that out on my own).

I'm starting to suspect a video card issue here.
To help rule it out, be sure that you have the latest, Win8 compatible video drivers for your system from the nVidia website.

I'll also be asking several other members to take a look at this.

    I agree.
How about we test the card?
FurMark download site: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net (appears to be bundled w/bloatware now - 12 Aug 2014)
Try downloading from one of the major download sites. Here's a link to it at Major Geeks (as of 12 Aug 2014): Download FurMark - MajorGeeks
    FurMark Setup:
    - If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
    - In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test (Looks like it's "BURN-IN test" now)
    - Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
NOTE: Set the alarm to go off at 90บC. Then watch the system from that point on. If the system doesn't display a temperature, watch it constantly and turn it off at the first sign of video problems. DO NOT leave it it unmonitored, it can DAMAGE your video card!!!
If the temperature gets above 100บC, quit the test - the video card is overheating.
    - Click "Quit" to exit
    [/quote]
    What you are looking for:
    - excessive heat from the GPU (report back with anything over 90บC)
    - problems with the video display (picture is distorted or jumbled, picture turns black, etc)
    - problems reported by the program (I haven't seen this, but "just in case")

Another question would be is your PC malware free. If you are not using Malwarebytes, please download it from here and run a scan with it (update before scanning) and uncheck the trial option at the end of the Setup.

The PC is malware free; Malwarebytes found no problems.

I will update this post when I get results from FurMark.

Edit: I don't see a stability test, so i'm going to assume GPU Stress Test.
    Attachment 56386

Edit #2: Max temperature was 70บC, there were no graphical problems during or after test, no problems reported by the software, and no BSODs during or after test. I have the latest drivers from NVIDIA.

Could you please post a full memory dump.
You should be able to locate the most recent one at C:\Windows\MEMORY.dmp
Zip it up and upload it to a free file-hosting service (such as OneDrive or DropBox), then post a link to it here.

I'm suspecting your GPU. Does this problem occur only when your system is idling?

Sounds about right most of the time. It just seems to crash about once a week every week, no matter what I do (most of the time it crashes when I idle, once at startup, and a couple of times, it crashed while running a game). Ive also just realized this is the same BSOD I used to get after Windows 8.1 wouldn't start up anymore, so I was forced to refresh with Windows 8. When I did that, I got this same error quite a lot, changed hardware, and it seemed to have died down for a while. Would that have anything to do with these BSODs, or is it just coincidence?

Edit: Also, should I leave Intel Turbo Boost on, or is that a recipe for disaster?
