Solved BSOD - seems random and unpredictable

Greetings,

I'm getting that deja-vu feeling. Its been a couple years since I've been through the BSOD experience and now its happening in my new computer build and Windows 8.1 Pro.

Previously the SevenForums did a bang up job of helping me sort it out so I'm really happy there is an EightForums.

So ... random BSOD that, based on observations, occur when ...

1) Low stress situations: checking email, web browsing, copying files etc.

2) High stress situations: Gaming (twice in WoT) and Video editing in Adobe Premeire CC (once).

Event Viewer Logs point mainly to ntoskrnl.exe but there are other suspects.

My previous Windows 7 BSOD experience flushed out Acronis Disk Director as the culprit. I've since started using Acronis again with this new build and that has me wondering.

What also has me wondering is that I do have a lot of hard drives going right now.

2 SSD drives - 1 for C drive OS and a second I use as a scratch Disk
4 HDD drives - internal SATA
2 USB3 drives - Western Digital Books
1 to 4 HDD connected via an eSata 4 slot Doc. (I don't always have them on.)

As always, thanks in advance for the great service you guys provide. Log files attached.

Regards,
Randy Smith

PS: I apologize if this ends up being a duplicate post. I think I previewed my first 1 and didn't submit and then I was puzzled when I didn't see the post in the forum. :)

Thanks and will do. It'll probably take me a day or two to get through all of this. I'll start with the drivers.

Hmmm... I'm also getting that deja vu feeling about the ASUS utilities I installed with the build. I recall having issues with them before.

Randy

Update:

I'm partially through dealing with the drivers. I've been pretty busy so I'm not sure when I'll get to the MemTest, maybe this weekend.

But I had a realization as I was uninstalling software and drivers. That is, one of the things I did on my new build after about a week was to change my RAM frequency from AUTO to 1600. That's around when I started having these problems. I did this because my MOBO showed the RAM at 1333 and I had purchased 1600.

A friend said that its not unusual to sometimes have to go in and manually set it in the BIOS. So I did, but I did not set the latency timings. This is the core of my new build.

MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
CPU: AMD 9370
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 Model F3-12800CL10Q-32GBXL
  • DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
  • Timing 10-10-10-30
  • Cas Latency 10
  • Voltage 1.5V

Today I went into the BIOS again and set the frequency to AUTO and once again it registers as 1333 but my computer has been stable all day.

Question is, do you think this could have been the primary cause of my BSODs?

Regards,
Randy

Hello,

Here's where I'm at. A friend suggested that since I have a new system and that I've been mucking about with the BIOS and the memory settings that I clear the BIOS and start over. So I removed the CMOS battery to clear the BIOS and when I booted I set the RAM to 1600 and changed NOTHING else.

I never did a MEMTEST since I didn't have time but my computer has been BSOD free for 4 days now. I'll mark this thread as SOLVED and if I have any more trouble ... "I'll be back!"

Thanks,
Randy
