    You said you have a legit copy. Then, install it by using the product key that came with the computer. Check the bottom of the laptop to find it. Most laptops have a hidden recovery partition that you can access when booting up using a certain function key.

    Of course it is. Just download a live OS like Puppy linux or something similar and use that to copy your data.

    Aha I did this with Ubuntu 4 days ago 64x with a USB and can't get to the files due to windows 8.1 running on the hard drive

    Download the iso file on another computer and burn it to a blank cd or put it onto a usb drive.

    I recovered all my files formated HDD installed Windows 8.1...after updating drivers, I updated BIOS it was on CMD it froze with verifying flash 85% it was stuck and screen was frozen so i had to turn it off, after turning it on it went back to windows login, checked if the BIOS updated it did but the touchscreen was not working so I restarted, after reset HP logo stuck doesn't boot up windows, pressed ESC sent me to BIOS, in BIOS menu I cant enter BIOS menu or system restore the keyboard works I tried a different keyboard and nothing feels like its frozen but when BIOS menu loads system restore pops up on right bottom but cant use keyboard to move anywhere
