PC froze and will not boot

So, about two weeks ago my PC started freezing up when surfing the Internet on google chrome. Hard freeze, no warning, no weird sound, just sudden lock up. No bsod. It wasn't specific to any certain webpage or thing. Thinking it was chrome related, I tried a number of fixes, with no success. I could use chrome for a minute or a few minutes then it would randomly freeze.

So, then the other day I was playing shadow of mordor and it locks up the same way. Hard freeze, but the background music still plays. When I restart, windows won't boot. Just goes to the logo and then black screen. Safe mode worked, so I end up just doing a full clean install, with a new os (was using 7, clean installed with 8.1). Clean install goes well.

After clean installing, I get action center message that my disk needs to be scanned. So I run chkdsk /r /f, restarted and let it run, then dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow. No problems found on scannow, and the action center message goes away. So I think I'm in the clear, right?

Wrong. I reinstalled steam, downloaded mordor and Valkyrie chronicles. Start playing Chronicles, go for about an hour, then it freezes on me. Hoping it's just the game, I reboot and try mordor. Play for about 10 minutes, it freezes the same as before, and again, doesn't want to boot up. It would seem the clean install did not work.

So now I'm thinking it must be hardware related. I'm not expert, just a hobbyist good at following advice I find on the Internet. And I'm out of ideas and thinking maybe I should just take the pc into a shop.

I'm running a gtx 570, gigabyte mobo, 8g ram, Intel i7 processor, crucial c300 ssd (where the os is installed) and a 1tb Hdd where I install most everything else.

Please help!

While waiting for a reply, try these 4 suggestions:
1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
2. Get ALL available, Win8.1 compatible updates from the manufacturer's website.
3. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
4. If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

As you have had notifications of a hard drive problem, start by running the hard drive diagnostics listed in suggestions 3 above ( Hardware Diagnostics )
