Random BSOD once a week

Hello

As per title, I get BSODs once a week, which is kinda annoying since this unit was only purchased a month ago. The computer is not doing anything too resource intensive when the BSOD occurs, so I am at a loss as to understand why it occurs.

Thanks

Specs: ASUS Transformer Book T200TA, Intel Atom 1.46Ghz, 2GB RAM, 32 bit Windows 8.1.

You only have 2 gB of RAM - and only 400 mB of it is available. This can cause serious problems with the OS, and I've occasionally seen it cause BSOD's. Please:
- increase the amount of RAM you have (if possible)
- while waiting to increase the RAM, please only use 1 application at a time (and fully exit it before opening another) and use a startup manager to stop excessive consumption of your RAM from startup apps.

Way too much present in the memory dumps for a system with an Atom processor and 2 gB of RAM. IMO you're demanding too much from the system. Please be sure to only run 1 app at a time - and to fully close it before opening another. I'd strongly suggest not using a virtual machine on this system as it'll greatly increase the chances of you running out of resources.

If stopping some of the extra stuff from running doesn't stop the BSOD's, then please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: http;//www.carrona.org/verifier.html

Hello

Here's the thing. I know that the BSOD caused on Oct 15 was due to low RAM, and that was because I was being a bit stupid, trying to use a VM on a 2GB machine - I got what I deserved there. I have not used a VM before or since. Discounting that BSOD fully, and only counting the "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" BSODs, are you positive that those BSODs were caused by low RAM?

Furthermore, is the asmmap driver anything to worry about and if so, how do I go about removing it? I can't find much info about it online.

The only guarantee that I can give you is that I'll gladly refund the money that you've paid for a diagnosis from me :0) (just kidding)
A guarantee would cost several thousand dollars of an analyst's time. I don't do it, so you'd have to outsource it from a professional firm that does do that sort of thing.

My analysis was (I presume) done on the reports that you generated after the incident with the VM.
As such, the system still shows a severe shortage of RAM.
The way to test this is to either:
- add more RAM
- stop running as much in memory.

My criteria for bringing up the RAM issue is when I see less than 1000 mB of RAM available in the systeminfo.txt report.
This is not a firm diagnosis, but rather a suspicion that RAM could be involved.
As such, further testing is required to rule it in or out.

A single memory dump is usually not adequate to figure out what's going on with a system. I like to see 4 or 5 memory dumps before I get a really good feel for where the problem is coming from.

Just FYI - here's how I do BSOD analysis':
- first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

As some 3rd party drivers will sometimes resemble a hardware problem, I usually try ruling out the 3rd party drivers at the same time that we do things to rule out the hardware. Once we've done as much as we can with the 3rd party drivers - then we presume it's hardware and move on from there. At some point in the discussion, we will address the possibilities of a Windows issues - and will discuss the options for testing it.

Another thing is the type of BSOD's that we see. If we discount everything but the IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL - then that shifts the emphasis from hardware to software (as these BSOD's are most frequently caused by drivers and not usually by hardware). Due to this I will sometimes throw in a request to run Driver Verifier in order to help diagnose 3rd party issues and/or rule them out.

As for the ASMMAP driver, I normally don't worry about it - but I don't keep track if Asus has released an update for it.
It's (IMO) an essential driver for Asus systems - so the procedure is to check and see if there's an update (look in the ATK section for the download). As it's in a .cab file, I haven't looked at the date on the file - but the long and short of it is, try and install it. If it doesn't update, then don't worry about it.
