    0x000000f Error can't boot windows 8.1

I have a error on one of my windows installs the error is
    pc/device needs to be repaired
The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

    File:\Windows\system32\winload.exe
    Error code:0x000000f

You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or usb device), contact your administrator or pc/device manufacturer.

only other problem is I wrote over it with another windows install but it still shows up as a bootable option so I would like to know how do I restore that partition with the error.

Hi Newraze & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

The ZIP File uploaded by you does not contain any Dump file to analyse.

I did not get what the problem is in your case.

Could you please explain in more detail so that I could help you out? ^_^

Try these as they shouldn't hurt anything if they fail:

Use the rescue disk or original installation disk to boot to a Command prompt -

    bootrec.exe /FixMbr

    bootrec.exe /FixBoot

    bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

Edit: Usually the commands are done in the order above, each a higher level of support.

There is a /ScanOs option to find all O/S partitions etc. but I'm not sure if it works with Windows 8

I guess I have a hidden partition or windows is picking up a weird partition scheme because it picks up my old os even though I wrote over the partition with another os. I ran those commands I also ran rebuildbcd but it didn't work I wasn't able to restore that partition.

Sounds pretty tough... hope the EXE isn't corrupt.

Refreshing or even Reinstalling seems to be the only conventional way left unless someone else can help but...

I'm in no way suggesting you use 3rd party open source software but this is probably what I would do.

I'd burn a Ubuntu ISO (x86 version for a few reasons I'd rather not go into here) reset the BIOS and boot from the CD and run Ubuntu live (trial not a full install so it just runs in memory).

I'd make sure I copied any important files from the windows partition(s) to another partion, external usb or esata drive just in case.

Then using certain editing tools I'd try to locate the old partition(s) and/or corrupt boot record(s) and if they looked like they were part of the problem I'd delete them and rebuild the remaining MBR(s) or GUID Partition Tables (GPT) and see what happens.

I might sound noob here, but did you simply install an OS on another OS without properly formatting the system?

Let me know how it goes after following the Stompem's instructions. ^_^
