BSOD and freezes that keep getting worse

Hi everyone.

I built a custom gaming PC a week ago and unfortunately haven't been able to get peace ever since. I've been seeing "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" or "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" BSOD, and my games have been randomly freezing 1-3 secs randomly (sometime never in several hours, sometimes twice every minute). Other than the freezes (where PC wont respond to alt-tab etc.) the games run butter smooth at around 55 fps. I play system intensive games such as Crysis 3 and Shadow of Mordor. After the freeze the game continues running with 55 fps , no micro stutters or anything. The GPU and CPU temperatures seem normal. What I've done:

- Ran CHKDSK - no error found
- Installed games on a different HDD and ran them from there to make sure the problem was not with the SSD - issues not resolved
- Ran memtest86 for one hour (4 cycles I think) - no error found
- Removed one of the two RAM sticks to try each of them out alone in different slots. Interestingly using a single ram I get significantly less frequent BSODs, but still do with each of them. This makes me think the issue might be with the MoBo?
- Ran Hot CPU Tester Pro diagnostic overnight. In the morning I saw that the PC had crashed and restarted and the screen displayed the warning "Your PC ran into an Error and had to restart".

After running the Hot CPU Tester Pro, my games are freezing at least 3 times more often and for longer periods, making them unplayable. Just now I had Mordor freezing my PC several times for 20-30 seconds which finally resulted in a crash. I am concerned that running the test caused further damage to whatever component that had the problem. Since the PC crashed during the Hot CPU Tester diagnostic, does this verify that either the MoBo or the CPU is defective? How do I know for sure? I hope the DMP files will show them.

I'll include the dmp file from the overnight crash and one from a crash that occurred just now. This latest crash gave the BSOD "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR volmgr.sys". A couple days back I saw "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR partmgr.sys".

Extra info:

-I have a 500W PSU (to be upgraded to a 650 W in a couple months). Some people say thats insufficient but I fail to understand how so. My calculations as well as several threads I've seen indicate its more than enough and even on the GPU's box it's written 500W as minimum. Nothing in my system is overclocked, I have a single GTX 970 and having nothing connected but 1 SSD, 1 HDD (now disconnected), CD-DVD Rom, kb/mouse thats getting power from the PSU. I am going to upgrade it when I decide to overclock and/or go SLI.

-Still I did it when I was told to check voltage levels with CPUID HWMonitor and things seem normal from what I can understand. The +5V +3.3V +12V levels never go past +/- 2% the values.

-Tried disabling all monitor and other background softwares.

-I kept the PC on with just music playing from VLC overnight several times and no crash. Crashes only occur when system is loaded while playing games.

I really believe the MoBo might be the issue but need to be sure obviously. I included the two dmp files which I don't know how to check. When I try to open them with notepad/wordpad I just get symbols and empty spaces.

Please help. I am about to go insane. Thank you in advance.

update

Update: Wow...major WTF moment. It seems like I found the culprit. I connected the SSD (where Windows OS is installed) to another sata port with another sata cable. All issues disappeared. So from the looks of it either the SATA port is defective or the cable is. Will test tomorrow as I'm currently exhausted.

How on earth can this have caused so many issues?! So if there is an issue with the hardware where the OS is installed:

a) your PC gets several different types of BSODs (btw had another different error today: " KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (luafv.sys) " and "System Thread Exception Not Handled"
b) You get these errors only when playing games, and games keep on freezing randomly 1-20 seconds
c) this happens even when the games are run from external drives...

Seriously what the hell... Will change as solved tomorrow after further testing. I would be happy if an expert could still check the DMP files to be sure.

This isn't unusual, but I'm glad that you found it. It was (most likely) either a bad cable or a bad SATA port.
Hardware errors will spit out random BSOD errors and won't blame anything in particular (over several BSOD's).
They can affect anything on the system, and will continue to frustrate you until you finally locate the problem device.

A quick story. I had my son's hardware fried by a lightning strike through the cable internet (I had surge protectors on the power).
Although it didn't blow out anything obvious, the system continued to spit errors and BSOD's. Finally, out of desperation, I removed the 56k telephone modem (which we never used anyway) - and all the problems went away!

Should the BSOD's return, I'm subscribed to this topic - so I'll respond to it within 48 hours.

Hello Usasma, and thank you. I just had another crash after a few days with no issues and got something entirely different this time. It was something like "System_Thread_Exception_not_Handled (asusfilter.sys)". After rebooting I realized my mouse and keyboard was getting no power. I tried different USB ports but nothing. I restarted the PC and after a flicker on the mouse again it was off and the screen was stuck at "Press F2 or DEL to go to UEFI BIOS". I restarted several times and the mouse/kb was just not getting power. I powered off the PC from the PSU switch and after waiting a while I turned it on and things returned to normal. Is it the motherboard again? I'm afraid the SATA port is not its only issue. I will be returning the mobo for a new one once I can be close to confirming. Here is the SF diagnostic file. I'd be very happy if you could look into it.

Can you try another power supply? Maybe purchase one from a shop that accepts returns for a full refund?

There are no complete motherboard diagnostics (they're too expensive to develop for a product that has such a limited lifespan).
If you haven't returned it already, please wait until you've completed the things that I suggest here.

Only 6 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 70 to 100 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available (and didn't experience any errors).

This device doesn't have drivers installed:

SM Bus Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8CA2&SUBSYS_85341043&REV_00\3&11583659&0&FB The drivers for this device are not installed.

This is most likely a driver for the chipset on your motherboard. Visit the Asus support site for your motherboard and download/install the latest, Win8.1 compatible chipset drivers

The uploaded MSINFO32 report is missing some info. Please try this app written by blueelvis. Just follow the instructions on his webpage. If the Windows SmartScreen stuff shows up, just click on "More info" and then on "Run anyway". Although this is a good app, it's always wise to scan anything that you download with an up to date antivirus. MSINFO Zipper - OMG Debugging!!!

Both memory dumps blame the ASUSFILTER.sys driver - it belongs to the ASUS USB Hub filter
But I did notice something very significant - your Razer drivers (?USB?) date from 2008 and are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
I'd suggest:
- uninstalling the Razer software
- using another keyboard (temporarily)
If that doesn't stop the BSOD's, then we'll have to have a look at the memory dumps in order to decide where to go from there (we'll have to see what's in the new memory dumps).
Once we've finished troubleshooting, feel free to go back to the Razer device with the latest, Win8.1 compatible drivers.

Also, Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).

Wow, thank you Usasma! I'll report back once I've tried everything you have listed. Today I got another asusfilter error right after USB devices started flickering. Seems like this is the only BSOD occurring now. The randomness of it is a big annoyance though. Things seem like they've been resolved and days later a BSOD! pff :/

I uninstalled the razer software ( I don't use the keyboard anyway, just plugged it for testing the USB issues). I'm having difficulty finding the ASUSFILTER.sys driver you mentioned. The link just opens a page with a link that directs to ASUS support site. These are the download files they provide ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Z97-AR . Closest I could find was ASUS USB 3.0 Boost V1.06.21 for Windows 7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit. USB BIOS Flashback -

That's the problem with drivers like this. There's no direct link for the driver for several reasons. The first is that the table is designed to get you close - but the exact driver depends upon what's offered by Asus for each different model and each different OS that the model supports.

But, we can research this and see if we can find an update.
......
After looking around a bit, I've found the driver in the USB 3.0 Boost application that's a part of the Asus AI Suite (in the Utilities section of your download page).
Please:
- download a fresh copy of the AI Suite software for your OS
- uninstall this program (and the AI Suite if it's present) from your system
- install the AI Suite that was freshly downloaded.
- monitor for further BSOD's
